The past few days, the weather in N. Texas has been almost perfect for riding. Temp in the 60/70's....sometimes just touching the 80's. The wind has been blowing....but what's new?
My in-laws came calling this weekend and as they drove up to the house yesterday afternoon, several WWII bombers flew over the house. Wow....powerful stuff. My father in law is a retired Naval aviator, post Korea and a small aircraft owner for much of his adult life. He sold his last aircraft about 10 years ago....and I could see the excitement in his eyes when he watched these historic aircraft fly by. My wife searched the newspaper for anything related to these aircraft and found that they were part of a non-profit dedicated to the preservation of such aircraft. http://www.collingsfoundation.org/menu.htm
The aircraft were parked at Love Field (home of Southwest Airlines) and were on display at the Frontiers of Flight Museum on Lemmon Ave, on the Love Field airport grounds. http://www.flightmuseum.com/about.htm The aircraft fly every morning and evening with paying passengers and sit on the "tarmac" from 10 am till 2 pm so that people can walk through and get a feel for what these planes were all about. $425 for a passenger, 30/45 minute flight...in one of the three bombers. $2200 per passenger, 30 or so minute flight or $3000 per passenger, 1 hour flight in a mint condition P 51 fighter. Incredible....I only wish I could afford this opportunity.
My father in law is 82 years old and in great shape. I offered him a ride to the airport (the long way) on the bike so he could see the planes. He took me up on the offer. My wife and mother in law drove the car and met us at the museum.
I regret that I FAILED (big time) in getting a shot of me and my father in law on the bike....but I took some cool shots of the museum and the historic aircraft. They had a nice BBQ lunch catered on site...yum!
It's amazing what you can find right in your own back yard. I grew up in San Antonio, Tx...the Alamo only 10 miles from my home. I went to the Alamo in 6th grade for a field trip and it was almost 30 years later that I returned and really did it right. Oh well....
Remember, it's fun to make local rides to see so many interesting things. I put about 70 miles on the bike today with my father in law in tow. He loved it and we took in the local sights.
Enjoy
