I tried a similar approach, but made of 100% plastic. They didn't work as I could hear a tiny leak. It may have worked if I added some cement etc. but I tossed them. These are rubber coated it seems, so maybe better. I use worms on the road and typically replace with an inside mushroom plug within a few weeks as that makes me feel 100% back to normal.
