I am the motorcycle safety focal for my squadron. I have a member in training down in Texas and he rides a Ninja 400. Monday he left base on the bike fully suited in gear and full face helm. A van turned left in front of him and he impacted the passenger door. His head went through the windshield. Because he was wearing a full face and impacted the windshield it saved his face from injury. The physics of how the glass broke slowed his head at the right speed. He has straddle injuries, bruised from the knees up. He also fractured his L1. Bike is totaled and the woman had insurance which will cover everything. He was traveling at the speed limit of 50mph.

I'm glad to hear your friend survived this nasty accident. As I was reading your post I thought it may not end so well. I hope he gets well very soon.
