Not sure this is the correct forum area for this question. Secondly, I swore there was a post just like this before but I can't find it.

To those of you who have owned both the 1100 and the 1300, what are the pros and cons to each bike? I seem to remember a guy who regretted moving to a 1300 from the 1100. I LOVE my ST11 and it has been trouble-free for 70k miles.......but....I've seen a couple low-mileage 1300s that are in my range. I've often thought about keeping my bike to see it hit 200k miles and get a 2nd non-sport touring bike but dealing with an angry wife isn't fun. Lol. Or I could go crazy and get a Multistrada, or a BMW RT. But I digress...

I put 150,000 miles each on an 11 & 13. The 13 moves the bike in a more sporty direction, faster, better handling and improved brakes. It’s geared a little lower, so not as relaxed as the 11. The shorter wheel base on the 13 gives it better agility but makes for a slightly choppier ride, that and the higher revs make it a bit less relaxed on the highway. The 1100 got about 3-4 MPG better mileage in my hands but this is strongly related to riding style, the 13 has a bigger tank so range is about the same, maybe a bit better for the 13. The electric screen is a big plus on the 13.
For me the 1300 was more reliable than the 1100. I suffered a blown stator and a burnt exhaust valve with my 11 at 50K and 85K miles respectively. Until reaching 150,000 my 13 only suffered a plugged 5-way vacuum T, and a failed thermostat. At 150K it developed a misfire that I could not solve so I sold it. I’ve never heard of another ST13 with that problem though. It wouldn’t discourage me from picking up another one someday.

In the end, I preferred the 1300.

I've had both but I have had the 1300 longer than the 1100. I loved the 1100 but I too love the 1300 more. IMO the pros are fuel injection, better looking and electric windshield. The big con for me is the heat but not everyone experiences it. Many will say the modern part of the 1300 is also it's downfall as older bikes can easily be tweaked if needed out on the road while computerization is not easily worked on while on the road.
While many will say, including me, that the 1300 is now behind the times, if you're interested in something newer with factory heated grips, seats, cruise control, TPMS, gps and ride settings then maybe you're better off getting something else. Of course those things can be added to any 1300 but it's not the same. I am in the same boat as I am beginning to think of what's next. For me right now it's the FJR, RT or GT and not necessarily in that order.

I own an 2000 ST1100 that has been the best bike I have ever own.....so far. I did test ride a ST1300 but did not feel it was leaps and bounds ahead of the ST1100.
