Re: Race Tech'd my Forks today!

Just recently had the Race Tech front and rear rebuild as well. I've since done 10,000 kms on the new set up. Huge improvement to the front end as mentioned.....not as harsh, I now have a very compliant front end over rough bitumen. However, even though the rear shock feels 100% better than the OEM, especially 2 up and fully loaded I've found that if I'm solo and lightly loaded I can't adjust the rebound damping to feel as plush as the front. I must point out that the roads in my area are particularly rough. On smooth road surfaces I've found rebound adjustment on the rebuilt rear shock to be adequate.

I'm not complaining too much as the mod was mainly aimed at making the bike more capable for 2 up touring......which it does well. I was also advised by the Race Tech rep that the OEM rear shock is a very average unit. Even though they advised me that there would be a significant improvement by revalving the OEM shock body with a Gold valve and a heavier spring a new shock such as a Wilbers will do a better job. I also had the front end lowered by 5mm's and the rear raised by 10mm's. It's made the bike turn in better and stopped the rear feeling so squat when loaded. Also dropped the front tyre pressure to 38 PSI as recommended by suspension specialist to increase contact patch size/traction. I only do this when solo but the front feels more planted with no real drastic tyre wear. Running BT 020's.

Re: Race Tech'd my Forks today!

I'm attempting to repeat your sucess on my bike. This is the spot I was at when I called it quits for the evening. The aluminum end on my bike would not allow the compression valve to come out ( circlip was removed ). I'll have to try "slipping" that cap off tomorrow. That would be easier than opening the hole a bit with emery paper!
Couple of ways to get those end pieces off. Tap at the top edge with something like a plastic mallet that won't scratch or ding the soft aluminum. If you have the snap rings out already, you can thread a bolt into the compression valve and yank on that. The valve and end piece will come out together. They aren't really on there very tightly.

Re: Race Tech'd my Forks today!

In 09 I had the Racetech gold valve and Hyper pro or hyper works rear shock done on my 1100. Prior to this I thought it might be a waste of $$.. NOW it would be one of my first farkles.

Just amazing the improvement. Looking forward to see your results on the 1300

Re: Race Tech'd my Forks today!

Jeff, or anyone.

I'm wondering if there is any improvement in the dreaded ST1300 high speed wobbles after the switch to the Race-Tech forks, and/or Race-Tech rear shock. Not that I would ever go that fast on public roads. :)

I've also noticed that when I carry a passenger (yes, I'm over GVWR) I have a tendency to have a little headshake if I have a very light grip on the bars. Very noticeable if I purposely remove my hands to experiment. I'm thinking that the heavier springs and associated suspension tuning will likely fix these kind of issues.

Can't say for sure Jim as I never actually experienced the instability. I've been up around 120+MPH a couple of times (don't feel a need to do this frequently) and she was dead steady before and after the upgrade. Based on the positive results reported regarding adding more rear preload, I think the upgraded spring could be expected to correct in the same direction?

Re: Race Tech'd my Forks today!

Nice to hear that about the 1100. I've installed the RT on my GL1800A and my F650GS and it's terrific. My ST1100 has very low mileage so I've not been willing to spend the money on the upgrade. But that may change.

Only had a short time to work on this tonight. Thanks for the tip. Mine did not give up easy! Had to also warm up the cap with a heat gun. But in the end...Success! :D

Not sure about the high speed wobble but the Race Tech rebuild has made the bike feel a lot more stable and less twitchy when travelling in dirty air generated by traffic at highway speeds.

Re: Race Tech'd my Forks today!

Not too bad Bob, more like finesse work though. The trickiest part is doing the rebound valve which rides on the damper rod. The valve body and shim stack are held on by a nut threaded to the end of the rod. The threaded section is hollow and instead of using threadlocker, Honda puts some kind of a punch into the hollow end and swages it over. Once you get the nut off, the threaded section seems to be expanded a bit. That and the buggered end makes it difficult to thread the Race Tech retainer piece on. Since the RT part is brass, you don't want to force it. I ended up finessing the end with my bench grinder and then running an M7 X 1.0 thread die over it to clean and re-size the threads. After that it's just a matter of assembling the valve bits and shims per Race Tech's instructions. The compression valves in the base of the cartridge are pre- assembled and pretty much pop right in once you realize the aluminum end of the cartridge slips off of the steel body.

Look'in for a little more "been there, done that" tech support!:bow1:
Here are a couple of pictures of the rebound valve both assembled (correctly?) and spread out so you can see the individual parts.

I seem to have 3 "spare parts" that don't really seem to belong anywhere. The big thin washer is identical to the one used under the spring at the top of the valve, the small fat one just doesn't seem to fit anywhere. The Ny-lock nut could actually be used in place of the threaded brass nut but Race-Tech instructions don't mention a self locking nut. Does this look right?:
I'm taking lots of pictures of this project that I'll post later that might entertain the curious or guide the adventurous. :D

Great Photos. Yours is assembled exactly the way I did mine after talking to Race Tech's support line. Not sure what those three extra parts are for ??? Don't forget to use some of that red loctite stuff on that bottom retainer.

Thanks for being my weekend Tech Support!:bow1:
Parts wise, the Race-Tech kit has been very complete. Haveing a few extra parts is better than being shorted! Their instructions certainly have room for improvement though. At least they put their Tech Support number on there for the inevitable questions.:D
Again Thanks!

Re: Race Tech'd my Forks today!

It should be noted that Race Tech made a conversion error in their instructions for the fill level. Race Tech says to set the oil fill level to 5.1" or 110mm. Well 5.1" is 130mm, not 110. 135mm is what Sonic Springs said to use so I went with 130mm on my forks with the Gold Valves and Sonics.

Re: Race Tech'd my Forks today!

I've finally finished this fork upgrade along with other maintenance on my bike, including a pretty new PR2 on front, and took it out for a spin. Besides just feeling good to get back on the road, I did notice a significant improvement to how the suspension handled rough road surfaces such as gravel roads. The front handled loose rocks and washboard smoothly while the back wheel was it's usual pain in the butt! A new rear shock is definitely on my wish list!
Just to list everything in the setup copied from WJBertrand :bow1:

1.2 Sonic Springs
Race Tech Gold Valve Kit, standard valve shim setup
130 mm fill level of 5w fork oil. I used Lucas since it was locally available
17 mm spring preload

I measured " sag " on the front forks as best as I could by myself and came up with an averaged measurement of 33 mm with 225 lb rider.

A very worthy upgrade!
