The last time I checked the valves was at 145,000 miles. The clearances have been stable since 86,000 miles and I just put off checking them again until now and boy was I glad that they still remain stable with only 1 exhaust closing from .010" to .009" in 32,000 miles.

This was a major service bringing up to date a coolant change, hydraulic fluid change, air filter and a throttle body synch. I still love this V4! Engine was clean and free of coolant or oil leaks, seeps, and weeps.

Glad to always hear this. As, I'm @ 82,000+ and gonna wait until that 100,000 mark. So many go to that easily. And since I rarely see anywhere near redline RPM......I should be good. And I'm always getting 44 MPG. Cool !!

Mine did not make 100,000 before adjustment was necessary and I don't go anywhere near red line either ( well, almost never!). I shimmed 5 exhaust valves at 86,000 - 1 was under spec and the other 4 were at spec limit and I moved them to the high side of spec. I did not keep a record I can find of which ones but I believe some of those would have closed under spec in due time.

How many times have you check the valves prior to 86Kmi? My ST buddy has about 110K or so on his '04 and is thinking about a valve check. I don't know if he's done one yet or if so when he's had it done.

With your particular experience if you started with a new bike (1300) at what points would you check the clearances?

I checked mine at 22k, 45, 65, 86, 110, 117 ( had to go deep to replace the alternator so I checked them at that time while everything was accessible), 145, 177.

To do over again I wouldn't change the intervals. If anything I think the ones under 50-70k are most important not to miss. By then I had data points and trends.
