Ready for a dumb one? What tool is necessary to loosen the front fork caps? Big hex? What size? I can't seem to find one big enough in all the auto/tool shops in town..... what's the deal here?

17 mm hex. Loosen the top pinch bolt before loosening the fork cap to take some of the pressure off the cap's threads.
Buy a tool that fits well. You don't want it to "cam out". Even though this cap should be tightened to only 17 ft/lbs you will swear that Mother Honda used an impact wrench to put it on at the factory.

Isn't the fork cap hex size the same as the front axle hex size? Seems I tried my hex wrench on both and they fit.

El Cheapo from El Napa! $6.15 delivered..... turned out to be a 3/8" drive rather than 1/2" and the fit seemed not so tight.... I was worried, but with my 200 lbs pressing straight down and my wife slowly pushing a 4' cheater bar, it worked...... and will now have a permanent home in the bike's tool kit! Thankee again....
