Does anyone know a good wrench in the PHX, San Diego or LA area to do engine work on an 1100.
Either a head gasket or worse issue.

What are the symptoms??

Head gasket failures on 1100s are not very common, unless somebody decided to run it with little or no coolant.

If it really needs a new head gasket, it might be more cost effective to find a salvage engine and do a replacement.

Crud! I just gave away a well running ST1100 engine for free! The taker was just going to cut it in half, put glass on it and use it as a coffee table. Which it could have gone to someone who needed it but shipping cost was the barrier.

I was really happy with the demeanor and the workmanship from the guys at Steve's Cycle when I was in Phoenix this spring. However, I can't attest to their abilities or cost on as big a job as you present. I just needed them to do tires and oil change. Seemed like a competent crew. Worth asking them for a cost estimate.

I deal with D&D Discount Cycles in Tempe. They know their way around a Honda and straight shooters. Steves Cycles in Mesa seem good. Spoke with them several times, but have not done business with them. Shop each of them.

Bought an engine and need to finish the install. Swap the good stuff and put it back together. Was a cracked cylinder wall.

Isn't the most trusted ST tech in the Pheonix area? Larry Igofar?

Send him a PM. I'd trust him before any dealer or shop.

EDIT: Disregard. I just saw the age of this thread.

For all Phoenix area Peeps out there who are looking for mechanical expertise, I have had two excellent experiences with Steve’s Cycle in Mesa AZ http://www.stevescycle.us/
Not many shop will even consider older bikes like my ‘94 ST1100 and I won’t let just anyone work on it. These guys “passed muster” when I talked to them and proved that they had the knowledge, experience, and expertise required. Just FYI...

Hi Bill:

Nice looking bike! North Bay, eh? I grew up there, went to elementary school on the old SAGE housing site (Birch Haven, by Trout Lake).

North Bay! I met a guy on ON 17 (north of Lake Nipisssing) when he stopped to see if I was ok while I was adjusting my ear plugs. He rode an ST1100 (c. 2000) and came with me to the Moto Guzzi rally in Lavigne where he insisted I try his bike. I took it for a short ride (about 3 miles up ON 64 and back), and when I got home, began my search for an ST. Two months later I was the proud owner of a 1300.

Still curious as to the circumstances that cause this... overheating?

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd like to see a pic of the coffee table.
