Maggie and I just got back late last week from a two week trip that took us through eastern Oregon and Utah down to Moab then across to St. George on the back roads. After a 2 day layover in Las Vegas, we hammered it to Twin Falls, ID then back to Seattle.
We regret not spending at least a full day in Moab and the day we spent riding from Moab to St. George really should have been split into two days. I should have known better and I put together the ride, so it's all my fault. Moab to St. George is about 485 miles and the day wrapped up riding through Zion National Park dealing with plenty of tourists and then a setting sun.
Our route took us down Hwy 191, 95, 24, 12, and then 9 into St. George. These roads feature some jaw dropping views. We'd stop to take some pix and tell each other it doesn't get any prettier than this and then around the next turn it's even better yet.
The riding around Zion was pretty spectacular and we spent some time up in the Kolob Canyon as well as Snow Canyon State Park. From the latter, there's a vantage point where you can look to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon some 140 miles away. Pretty cool! Maggie's little sis and her hubby joined us for the riding down there and we had a blast with them.
The only real downer of the trip was the freak weather we hit as we were coming off Lolo Pass in Idaho. We were in the middle of nowhere when a driving snow storm hit. Slush was developing on the roadway and we inched our way along for 45 minutes with cheeks in full pucker until all of a sudden as quickly as it hit, the snow disappeared.
If you've never been to the southern Utah area, do yourself a favor and put it on your bucket list. You won't be disappointed. Just remember backup gear for inclement weather!!
