Re: ST Available Tires - Canada

Mellow et al - thanks for all the good info on ST1300 tire availability. I am getting due for new shoes for my 1300 so began checking local suppliers. The only success I had in Calgary was one BT020F front tire and an offer to ship the rear tire in from eastern Canada. My quote was for a total of C$375 (plus GST of course)(not sure if that covered shipping either).

Just for the HOI, I checked into the Two Brothers web site and found BT020F Battlax tires (my preferred) on sale for US$227 total, with delivery in US included. Figured since I was headed south to my Whitefish cabin anyway, I'd have then delivered there and bring them home using my cross-border purchasing allowance. Tried to order by internet, but the difference between the Canadian billing address and US delivery address threw the system off kilter, so used the old fashioned telephone instead.

An obviously handsome, talented young man took the order on July 19th and by the time I arrived at suppertime on July 21, UPS was heaving the two new tires onto my deck. Talk about quick, super service.

In case any of my fellow Canadians are having the same trouble locating tires of their choice, I can attest that this outfit works, and even if you can't pick them up over the border as I did, their $50 export costs should keep the costs very competitive.:bow1:

I'm interested to see that for the later ST1100 (96-02) the only tyre mentioned is the Dunflop:(. Why is this so? The Meteler Z6 works really well on this bike and is one of the few brands (that are available here anyhow) that does a matching front and rear in the correct sizes 120/70R18 and 160/70R17. My mate who rides the same model as mine has been using Z6's for years and he averages about 13000 kms out of a set, dunno what that is in miles.. you'll need to work it out.

I've only used the original Dunlops and replacement Bridgestones on my '04. My last set was a mix of BT021 on the front and BT020 on the back. The rear tire went 2+ seasons in cluding some long trips and still had lots of wear left. The 021 front was nearly gone and the wear pattern was odd - shoulders worn and center section less so. Steering was affected - wanted to fall into the turns and the climb back onto the center section seemed to take a little effort.

Just put two new 020's on (Two Brothers) and love the handling again. No tendency to fall into the turn and smooth as a BB. - I'm a touring rider, not too aggressive, usual load about 220 lbs - 42 psi both. Thanks for your info.

BTW, hasn't Bridgestone changed to the 021 now?
No, the BT020F is one of two OEM spec tires for the ST1300. The 021 would be closer to the BT020U and can be up to half the mileage. The 021 does not replace the 020F. The BT020F has been run at 100MPH with 0 PSI in a straight line. I love kevlar tires :D

Boy! What a pile of info.

Has a consensus emerged about which tire set is best for the ST1300?

Failing that do we have a consensus about which tire is best by category? (Best wear, Best dry traction, Best wet traction, Least prone to failure [e.g. blow out, delamination, bad tread life, bad wear patterns (e.g. cupping))

Now that you have had a chance to try these ones, what do you think of them. Do they handle well in the twisties and what about the mileage? I have 6000 thousand on the OEM's so far and they are close to the wear bar...They handle the tar snakes very well, but am not pleased with the wear...
I pulled a set of Continentals off my Yamaha XJ11 back in the 80's because of extreme sidewall flex in the front tire...

The Continental rep in Edmonton didn't have a clue what I was talking about. However, SanFran Yamaha told me when I was down south that they had so many problems that they didn't sell connies anymore....

Any evidence of sidewall flex????

I believe the ST1300 was officially released in the US in 2003 even though in late 2002 some may have been sold.

In other countries there was a 2002 ST1300 which again, may have been a 2003. I 'm not sure.

But, the important thing is all ST1300 wheels across all years are the same size so if it says ST1300, it will fit your ST1300.

Mellow.

I think you can remove the D205 rear size for the ST1100 (160/70ZR17). When I called for a replacement, the dealer said "those tires are for Harleys". He was able to find a leftover somewhere. The front D205 for the later ABS models is still available though.

Let me correct my last message....

The Avon Tyre website states the following:

ST 1300 / A (2002 onwards)

(sorry for the misscommunication with the +)

...which I take to mean that they don't recommend any Avon tyres for the ST...

I assume the reason why Avon doesn't list their tires as a fitment for the ST1300's, though they make them in the appropriate size, is because many riders have experienced a problem with head shake with the Avon Storm and Storm 2 Ultra tires. I know I did with three different tires. That's too bad because outside the 35-50 mph range where the shake occurs, the tires are the best handling and longest lasting tires I've used.

My last tires were ME880s. I got 12K miles out of both front and back with even wear all the way. I'm needing another set of tires. I may try the BT023's next because I've heard some good things about them and they're much cheaper.

Removed, partially due to Raven's accident and some other posts about the Storm II as wel no official recommendation by Avon.

FYI, I recommended the Conti Road Attacks be added to the list for the ST1300 (post #18) as I put on a set and liked them a lot. They had great grip, wet or dry and made good mileage with little of the annoying buzzing that happens to most tires late in life.

When those were due for replacement, I called to oder another set of the Road Attacks and was told they were not approved for the ST1300--so I didn't buy a 2nd set. Given the recent rash of failures of other brand tires, I thought I'd check the Continental website. Their fitment guide chooses the Continental Road Attack for fitment to the ST1300, but there is a note in the Remarks section: "No official approval for Continental tyres from motorcycle manufacturer."

Would I order another set? Yes. I liked them. But buyer beware. ;)

What do these mean? I have a '01 non-ABS that needs a new set, and find my choices dwindling.

|110/80ZR18||160/70ZR17
|110/80-18||160/70-17|
|110/80-V18||160/70-V17|

(Currently Avon storm 2 ultra down to the wear bars on rear and shaking on the front at mid speeds with a loose grip)

Mike, V and Z are speed ratings, R is radial ply.
http://www.garage-pak.com/pat-goss-washington-post/2003-wp-tire-nomenclature.html

Edit: Absence of those letters does not necessarily mean that they are not V Z or R. ... it depends on how each manufacturer chooses to mark the tire size/ratings into the sidewall and/or for use in ordering the tire. Check each manufacturer's site to be certain of ply, temperature, load, and speed ratings.

Can anyone link to the details of this, I just wore out a set of Avon Storm 2 Ultras on my 1100 and was planning on another set.
