Left Rear Bearing

While putting new shoes on my 96 ST1100 with ~130K miles, I found the right rear bearing was almost disintegrated. :(
Balls were there, outer race intact, inner race a mess.
This is the third time: ~90K, 110K, 130K.
Thus, I had ordered bearings from CBR before removing the wheel. ;)

A SabMag buddy suggested the final drive pumpkin might be twisted. He recommended the method prescribed for installing SabMag rear wheels:
Loosen the bolts holding the pumpkin to the shaft housing.
Install the wheel
Tighten to torque specs
Then, tighten the bolts holding the pumpkin.
So, I did it and will know more at the next tire change.

This ever happen to others?

I'm suspecting a bad left bearing on lipSTick right now, forgot to check'em when I swapped out the tar last week. D'Oh! :doh1:

Gonna pick up a generic bearing and carry it with just in case things deteriorate. I have a full set of CBR bearings at home which I forgot to pack. D'Oh!! 2 :doh1:

The procedure you listed is correct for the ST as well as the Sab/Mag.

I do, it is easy enough to pry the cover off and fill it up. I just like to know it was not the one that didn't get enough during assy..

Hummm, I haven't because they're sealed and I didn't want to mess with the seal. Will try it on old bearings.

[Carl]: Twice, the left rear bearing died and left the outer race firmly stuck in the wheel. So, I had to find a shop with the "expanding race grabber" to remove the race. First time this happened I started cutting with a Dremel and gave up after the first abrasive wheel ground down.

Its easy, just use a small screw driver and work your way around. It is just a plastic plate that is pressed in.

Hmmm, I used my Dremel to cut the outer race out of my wheel after giving up trying other methods. It did take a couple of cutting wheels, IIRC.

No need to Dremel the outer race or find a special tool to remove the bearing. I use a steel washer just slightly smaller than the outer race edge and spot weld it to the bearing in a couple places. Turn the wheel over and you now have a good shoulder to knock the bearing out. Easy as pie. You do need a welder.
