Is there a generally agreed upon best mounting system for the ST1300? After years of waiting to purchase a gps am going to finally do it. Think I've seen one center mounted near or slightly above dash which made sense. The easier to glance at the better.

Pretty sure I'm going with one of the Garmin Nuvi models.

Thanks for the advice, and photos!

I have the ML riser plate with ram ball and I attached a Ram-Mount to that. You can find a lot of Ram ball mounts at any gps website. Do a search

I prefer the center mount slightly lower than the dash like post 3.
If you don't have risers a 12" pc of allthread some washers, fendor washers and a nyloc nut makes a cheap ball mount thru the ctr of the triple tree.

The Heli riser top is fairly flat.... you can always temp place the suction disc on there and go with the supplied suction mount.. Works fine for me.

I may have a center plate with threads for mounting a RAM ball. Let me know if interested. Priced at about $50.

Check out the Roy Fletcher/Ron Smith dash shelf (there's a thread around here somewhere.) Excellent product. I have my Zumo on a RAM ball in the center of the shelf. Doesn't obstruct my view, but it's quick to see without taking my eyes off the road. (The shelf also gives you room for a radar detector and still has space left.)

I originally had my Zumo 550 on a Ram mount off the center of my Heli riser. Not a bad location, but I had to look down to see it and had to reach into the middle of the handlebars to make any adjustments. Ok while stopped, but not what I preferred while moving. btw: I mean MINOR adjustments like raising/lowering volume or skipping a song or such...not trying to do major routing or such that you should stop to do.

At Americade two years ago i saw another ST1300 that had an extra long Ram arm mounted on the left handlebar. This puts the Zumo higher, more in your view (higher tha the top of the dash) but off to the left side so it doesn't block the speedo/tach area. Easy very short reach of left hand to make adjustments and then the left side buttons are very useful. I greatly prefer this spot and when stopped I just put my full face helmet over it.

BTW, We all remember to secure the Zumo itself when the bike is unattended, but please also give some thought to the replacement cost of that Zumo mc mount....it ain't cheap! SO, what I did is replace the standard twist to tighten knob with the Ram locking knob. That way the zumo mount is locked to the bike.

The Ram arm I am using is about 6 inches or so long, it's the longest one Ram sells.

Now I use that center of the riser plate Ram mount for my Ecort radar detector.

Another idea, I purchased from Motorcycle Larry, a Brake/Clutch fluid reservoir cover that has a threaded hole on each end for a ram ball and then a short extension. Then you can get a cradle to fit what ever GPS you have that also has a ball on the back side. I attached it to the Clutch reservoir side that way when I need to access the GPS it is just a fingers length away. I can adjust it so that it sits just below the view of the tach. Check out mounts and cradles from Motorcycle Larry. I purchased the Garmin Nuvi 550. It is the least expensive GPS that is waterproof, works great and the screen sensitivity works with gloves on.

Apology for digging out an ancient post! I'm just trying not to open a new topic for it. After looking and reading around I found the best GPS mount would be the top dash mount like Migsel. Would like to know some opinions from you guys if the top mount be blocking some of the view?? Looks big from the photo....

We've been making a GPS Dash Mount for years now with no issues. As for blocking vision; if you are looking through that section of your wind screen, you are too small for the bike.

It comes in a single double or triple ball.

I too use the Migsel. Purchased several years ago because it was the only one of its type available.. If I were buying again I would save some money and buy Larry's Sporttouring rig......much cheaper.
