Stock ST1100 luggage locks

massimo

Hi all, I searched but didn't really find the answer to this most basic of questions, my apologies.

Anyhow, just picked up a 2000 ST1100 with stock panniers, and the ignition key doesn't seem to want to work the locks on the latches (the ones on the panniers themselves, not the latches that keep them on the bike). One pannier has both latches unlocked, the other has both latches locked.

The questions:
1. Is the ignition key the key that is supposed to be able to work these locks?
2. If yes, does this most likely mean that the panniers that came with the bike originally belonged to another bike?
3. If yes, how could I go about sourcing a key for these panniers? If no, what am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, Yes, and I'm not sure, but there's likely a number on the cylinder in the bags with which you can get a key made from Honda.

Re: Stock luggage locks

It is possible that the cylinders were replaced for some reason but the most likely cause is the bags are not original. I wonder why they didn't move the cylinders over to the replacement bags. It isn't that hard. Are your bags locked? As for a key number I could look but I don't think there is one on them. Karen is right that they could be rekeyed.

OK, thanks for the advice everyone. I bought the bike from a shop, and the guy who sold me the bike said that he seems to remember testing the key in the locks, but I'm going to bring the bags back in and we'll try to figure it out. If that doesn't work (and I don't see why it would--yes I'm a ST noob, but I do know how to operate a lock [I *hope*] I guess I'll go the locksmith route. I need a spare key made anyway...

MASSIMO - Sometimes with a lot of wear, the locks do not want to open. Try inserting the key in to the lock, pushing straight down and wiggling the key a little bit. I have some on one of ST1100s that have the wear issue so that's what I do. But they could be different locks or different bags also.

Heh, believe me Phil, I've pushed, pulled, wiggled, shimmied, turned hard, sharply, soft, lovingly, begged, pleaded, and asked nicely and not so nicely, and haven't had any luck with any of the four locks.

One additional possibility is that the one key I have seems to be a little worn down, and is bent slightly, so perhaps it's just that the tumblers in the bag locks are more "picky" than those in the ignition, fuel cap, seat lock, and bag latches, but that seems like a long shot.

Graphite lube should be tried too.

Its cheap.

It's possibly a wear problem but could be the wrong lock too. There are (IIRC) 5 pins in each lock barrel, the arrangement of the pins is easy to change. If you have one that works (seat? right fairing pocket?) you can dissasemble and get the arrangement then (potentially) set the panniers to match.

I've had one lock barrel apart to clean out the broken plastic weather shield, other than that I've not done it myself but have been told this is all it takes. If ya do disassemble, be careful of the tiny springs behind each pin.

One of these days, I'm gonna do it on STick's locks as several of those weather shields are broken, can be a PITA to unlock (never had a problem locking one) when yur out in the wilderness and yur dinner is locked up tight!

Thanks, all. Brought the bags back to the shop and they reset the tumblers to work with my key, no charge. They also threw in two newly cut spare keys for me. Time to load up and tour!

Hi UP,
I just broke my key in the pannier lock, where it attaches to the bike, any ideas on how to get the broken part out?
it will still unlock/lock with my spare key or a screwdriver but I'd prefer to have it back the way it was, these keys must be made of rubbish, hardly any pressure on it and it snaps,I always keep the the locks well lubricated too with GT85,
thanks B

Simplest way is to remove the lock and disassemble from the back. A locksmith might be able to hook it out...

The 1100 keys are way better than the 1300 keys. :D

Thanks George,I tried hooking it out but thats seems impossible, for me anyway.
I'll take it of and try and disasemble it as you say.

+1 ;-)

And I would hesitate to use any oily substances in locks/barrels (dunno mentioned GT85 but their http does not state to use it on such...), as it tends to bind with dust and can build up quite some crud which then can seize/hinder movement of mentioned pins/plates. YMMV

Also the mentioned weather plates on the pannier locks seem to disintegrate way faster if stuff like WD40 is used (besides that they seem vulnerable to UV-radiation as can be seen on bikes which are always parked outdoors...)
I use small amounts of graphite powder on all locks, and smear only a tiny ammount of silicone lube on those plastic weather shields with a Q-tip.

Thanks Uncle Phil,and ST1100y,
I remember someone telling me once about rubbing a pencil on a key to make it work more easily, hopefully the broken part will drop out when I get it disassembled.
I thought I was doing the right thing spraying penetrating oil in all the locks, well you learn something new everyday, graphite from now on.

In regards to those plastic weather shields:

they of course always decide to crumble in the worst possible moment.
After arriving at the hotel and unmounting the bikes a co-rider suddenly complaints that one pannier lock refuses to open.
Upon examine I realise that the key isn't getting in fully, pulling the key out opened that the most part of that plastic bit was gone...
Rushed to the reception desk, asking for a thin paper clip, McGyver mode on and Leatherman out I bent it straight with only a tiny catch on the end, removed the pannier, turned it upside down
onto the seat, kneeled aside his bike and started 'fishing' in there... it fell out eventually... after quite some fancy language being spent...

You don't want to have this happen on a ride...

Well I removed the lock but it's still the same problem trying to hook it out, there is no way to get at the barrel to tap it and even if I could I'd need 3 hands because I'd have to keep the lock cover open at the same time,
I came across some good lock lubricant at the locksmiths where I was getting a new key cut,Abus lock lubricant PS88,it has good reviews, not sure what the active ingredient is,don't think it's sulphur based though.

Got it sorted today, just took it to the locksmith and he took it apart and removed the broken key.I have 2 spare keys now just in case.
