Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014?

HD just announced some 2014s will be water cooled like the new GS-just the head.

My VFR motor question was in response to post 1043.

Are you talking about HD or BMW? The new R1200 motor is a completely new engine, with integrated gearbox, new heads, TBs on top, exhaust out the bottom, wet clutch etc. etc.

I'm not understanding your point. Why would you want to? The VFR engine would have to be completely redesigned because the integrated gearbox output is on the wrong side.
New Harleys are water cooling the heads. The 1200 V4 has the rear cylinder bank connecting rods inside of the front bank. 1 &3 are inside of 2 & 4 so that engine would be kind of hard to package like the ST1100 & ST1300's longitudinal layout.

That was the point of my question, you can't just turn it around. You need a different engine. Or the current ST engine.

I'm pretty sure the non announcement was already made. But Honda is secretive, so they still may not announce, again. We just have to wait for that.

At the very least, you have to accept the idea that Honda will never build another one-off bike (meaning an engine that is only used in one model) like the ST13. Those days are gone.
Have you seen the purpose-built, air-cooled 2013 CB1100?...

Looks like it will only be on selected touring models like the Ultra. The radiators will be in the leg fairings.
Well, yeah. HD is hide bound and constrained by tradition and the first water cooled real HDs are ones that can best hide the radiators. (Not counting the V-rod. Everyone knows those aren't "real motorcycles" anyway.) More water heads are coming to the faithful however.

I wonder if it has more to do with rider comfort than with emissions standards??

That's precisely what I heard, or didn't. Thanks to the Golden Contingent for helping clear everything up.

I think more comfort is a byproduct of liquid cooling. HD was going to have problems meeting tighter emissions standards, both here and abroad without a change.

It's going to piss me off if Honda comes out with a new, real sport tourer after I bought the Triumph. I just got tired of waiting on Honda .

I just can't see HD selling any Sporters with rads hanging off them. At least the v-rod kinda hid the rad.

Maybe a small, oil cooler size radiator. The are basically only cooling the exhaust valves now. It 'll be an incremental change.

5 weeks and we'll know whether Honda's fishing or Motorcyclist's editors are so befuddled by their sudden change in ownership that they couldn't come up with a better story than wondering what's happened to a 4 year old concept....

EICMA 5 November - 10 November, Milan, Italy.

Anybody want to contribute to my EICMA Kickstart campaign? I'll head on over there and get the truth out of those Honda folks!

Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014?

I think modified crosstourer is more likely to make an ST1300 replacement than a vfr1200f. I hope they don't add too many pounds to it. If they can do several changes to the crosstourer for touring purposes, it can make a nice machine I guess. Honda's reliability is there already and all they have to do is to meet the peoples expectations. If they can fix that machine in the areas that needs improvement or upgrades that would have a competitive edge in the sales.
I wish they can make something like an in-between class (tourer and adventure) bike; upright seating but not too high ground clearance, normal front wheel instead of 21" something for fire roads if needed, nothing like a dirt bike or off roader.. Without a beak but have enough wind protection... So 90 percent road 10 percent off road machine..

The VFR1200F is the platform the CrossTourer is built off of. Honda originally said before the F model was released that three motorcycles would spring from the platform. We have seen two.
