There I was at 65 mph when my wife yells STOP! the topbox fell off. Sure enough in my mirror I see it crashing/bouncing down the road. *****?

I don't know how it came loose. We were riding for over 2 hours before it happened. I am sure it was locked and secured?

Anyway, major cosmetic damage to the paint and some of the plastic but it remarkabaly stayed intact and is usable. I don't see any broken/failed fastening components.

Any suggestions on getting it repainted? Anyone know the 03 silver color code?

Thanks for reading.

I lost mine in the garage i didn't get the two front pieces in there slots and only the rear latch was holhing it sort of

As the top box is my wife's backrest, I have had recurring nightmares about the box coming off, and her bouncing down the road along with it. Most likely a passenger falling off the back would strike her head, and break her neck. I've visualized it over and over.

We have a Givi box on my ST1100. To fix that problem, I bought a #10 thread thumbscrew at the local hardware store. I drilled up through the bottom of the bracket, into the bottom of the box. Tapped the new hole in the Givi bracket. Then installed the thumbscrew through the inside of the box. The thumbscrew has a plastic cover, so isn't likely to damage any of the box contents. Obviously, if you remove the box, you have to remove the screw first.

If somehow the box latch were to come open, the box would get loose, but not come off immediately due to the screw holding it. You'd have time to stop and address the problem.

should be on a sticker under your seat, it'll say color code and have some letters and numbers

Real brain picture. I can see it happening. Mine’s a Givi and I have found the latch open more that once. Now its an obsession like did I leave the garage door open, the coffee pot on, the iron on, my ex-wife’s curling iron, did I lock the front door.

Thanks for the replies fellas
The topbox is the hondaline. I just don't get what happened? Bottom line is that no one was hurt. Parts can be fixed/replaced.:03biker:

I think I will take the suggestion above and install some sort of safety mechanism.

-Absolutely bummed

Submit to insurance company. Even if they don't cover it because of your deductible, it counts against it if anything else happens.

If it was locked and secured it would not have fallen off. The fastening mechanism is top notch. I always Give the Carry handle a good pull to make sure it is all locked good. I'll bet your carry handle was out a little bit and the key lock did not catch it, when you locked the lid.

Or it wasn't hooked on the part closest to the seat.

ST Pilot was concerned about this type of situation with his Givi top box. Here is his quick and easy fix to make sure it can't fall off.
