Tinkered on an ancestor of our ST [emoji41]
owned by the acquaintance of a friend, last MOT '96, grounded since then... go figure... [emoji57]
Hunt for parts and work related took me a couple of months, but at the end she fired right up [emoji106]
Need to fix/seal the fuel petcock, and then we're ready to roll [emoji41]

Beautiful!! I had a '79 CX500 Deluxe.

Next time you get a chance make sure you pull the fan off & check the backside of the fan hub for cracks. If that thing "grenades" it will take out the radiator - not pretty! You can still get a new fan for around $35 to $40 usd.

Guess what?
That propeller is replaced with a brand new NOS item ;)
Forks overhauled, head/wheel bearings, carbs fully done (what a mess!!), the fuel tank cleaned & refurbed (OMG!!!), fuel unit (beyond anything I've seen, hence NOS replacement), 7V supply for temp & fuel gauge rebuild, all coolant O-rings, thermostat, all filters, all liquids, brakes fully overhauled (all 3 front lines clogged & replaced with rare to find NOS...), etc, etc, etc...

And that thing fired up at first attempt, just like that... :thumb:

My son-in-law has an '82 CX500 but his is the less desireable (to me at least) Custom psuedo-cruiser model. He is modifying it into a cafe bike with a short seat and lowered bars. I think it will be a nice rider when its done. The CX sure was an innovative machine in its day.

In the UK those things were used a courier bikes and they had an incredible reputation for unkillability (is that a word?). They were truly a reliable, if relatively unexciting motorcycle.

Anyhow, you are sure doing a nice job on it - would love to see more pictures.

Pete

That engine is a classic. I owned one and loved it.
Good luck with your work to get it back in shape.

That is a very neat little box on the back of that SilverWing TourNut.

I wish somebody made a slick little bike like that now - one that had 50-70 HP, handles well and could carry one person comfortably while NOT looking like a Transformer that was going to rear up on its hind legs and turn itself into a refrigerator or picnic table.....

It came with that OEM box AND a passenger seat to fit there instead

Counter point. The CX 500 was my first street bike after many years of dirt biking. Couldn't wait to sell it after Yamaha came out with the 750 Seca.
Not for me, didn't handle and shook worse then my dirt bikes. Perhaps being the only street bike I ever crashed also has something to do with my
opinion.?

Them's fighting words! :) I loved my '82 Seca 750. I bought it second-hand in '85 complete with full Yamah logo'd frame mounted fairing and lowers, panniers and top box. It was a mini-ST1300 and the bike on which my, then, new wife and I spent three weeks riding out to Vancouver Island. That's still one of my most memorable and enjoyable tours and the Seca was a big contributor to the fun. I thought it was smooth and, if you rowed the gearbox to keep it in the powerband, plenty powerful for some sporty riding, even two-up. If it had been fuel injected I might have kept it, but as it got older I found I had to pull the carbs every spring to clean them before it would start.

Here's a pic of an '83 example with the factory tupperware and a custom seat. AFAIC it was a bike ahead of its time.

+2 Hi Martin. Very nice work! LaST I remember you had just moved into the new shop/workspace.
BeST, John
Yeah, quite some things going on... [emoji848]
Like what you've done with the place though [emoji57]

Well, some random pics...
Didn't really document the project, over keeping focus on the tasks at hand [emoji848]

The USA never saw this version of the CX 500. We had the CX500 Deluxe for a year or two, then the CX500 Custom (cruiser) and finally the GL500/650 (undressed and Interstates) and the Turbos. I had a GL500 but I think I may have purchased this had it been available.

(I bought a VF750S after wrecking the GL500, and this looks a lot like that (and the CB750F and CB900F)

This is the USA story.
I had a GL650 and it was a great bike.
I'd love to have one today.

Yes, Major Tom, I couldn't wait to sell my CX500 Deluxe. I loved my first year bright red Seca, it was smooth, fast and so much better handling. When the Seca first came out it was the fastest Jap bike for a few months. Then the other companies came out with true sport bikes. The Seca couldn't compete as a sport bike so they came with the hard bags like yours had. I rode the Seca until the ST1100 came out and my '03 ST 1300 until last year. The CX500 was the only bike I ever sold, street or dirt that I was happy to see disappear down my driveway!

Maybe they do Pete, and it's a Honda.

My last bike was an 83 GL650 Interstate which satisfied a number of things for me: I really wanted an ST1100 but wasn’t worried about dropping the GL a few times while getting my feet back under me. It didn’t have so much power that I’d scare myself too badly. It had lots of storage. It had an engine design I thought was interesting. And a few other things.

From what I could tell on the forums, you could not kill one of these.

And then I found this ST. And sold the GL to a 6’ 2”, 240 lb guy who took a CBR250R over 4,000km over 7 days from Toronto to the James Bay hydro electric dam area in Northern Quebec. Makes for a great picture album!

He wanted a bike with more storage and power than his CBR. I’ll bet he’s planning some trips with the GL...
