Recently noticed a portion of the wire harness under the seat experiencing chafe from the left-side hook underneath the seat on my '98 ABSII. Easy fix, but was wondering if anyone else has experienced this or if perhaps that portion of the harness is incorrectly routed on my ST1100.

That loom should be right up against the frame rail.

CORRECTION: Just had a look. My Standard model has a much smaller loom there, beside the frame. No where near as big as that one.

Looks to me more like electrical tape than loom. I'd probably start peeling it off the wires to see what is under there. My guess would be a spliced wire. Regardless, after removing the tape, I would sleeve the wires with one layer of woven plastic loom, and depending on how much room was left, perhaps a second harder plastic layer at the chafe points. Scotch 33+ tape at both ends to prevent the loom from moving.

Here's the wider view. If it's electrical tape, then my entire wiring loom is wrapped in electrical tape. Thanks for the recommendation.

Would you consider making rounded notches in that pair of gussets for the loom to nestle into? A drill bit on its side would work.

Larry, that's a hell of an idea, thanks, I'll definitely consider it. I'm thinking that part of my problem is the way I install the seat. The OEM backrest I have somewhat interferes with the back edge of the seat when I'm putting the seat in. I have to hold down the front of the seat while pushing from the back to make sure that the notch in the front of the seat properly engages with the protruding flange on the fuel tank.
