We were happy to leave the heat of the city and escape into the cool mountain air for a while...
Had a day's downpour on the 2nd day heading west...
Passed through two brief territorial showers (one with some hail) on the way home (the weather changes within minutes/when passing into another valley here)

2020 is the first time in 30+ years that I have been unable to ride the Alps thanks to COVID. I miss the riding, the culture and the people very much - a severe case of Alpinitous. It's great to be there vicariously through your pictures and comments.

We wandered out over some of the roads you mention during one of my tours last September. We spent a couple of nights in Millstatt and rode as far east as the Turracher Höhe and the Nockalmstrasse. We also visited the Kölnbrein-Dam. It's a beautiful location. I was also intrigued because it is Austria's highest dam and has that funky viewing platform that you can look through to the ground below.

I too have stayed at the biker friendly Iselsberghof several times although not recently. I remember the owner to be a great guy and a serious biker. Hopefully he is still there and doing well.

I had planned to bring my ST1100 to Europe this summer and leave it there. Fingers crossed that COVID is sorted out a bit by next summer. Thanks for posting.

I run tours designed to split the difference between going on your own and the big tour groups. I help you rent the bike, reserve the hotels, tour prep info and I lead a daily ride, which you are welcome to join or you can go off on your own. I keep the groups small (max of 7 bikes) and endeavor to attract experienced riders, which works well for the riding dynamic and off-bike social interaction.

I usually run 3 tours in June/early-July and 3 tours in September ranging from 6 days to 11 days per tour or they can be linked together for 25 - 30 days. I have a tour member from new Zealand who comes every other year and does all of the 3 September tours together. Some tours focus primaily on one region, say the French Alps or the Swiss Alps (those are 6 day tours). Other tours cover multiple regions.

I originally went on my own for 15 years 2 times a year and then I started offering guided tours 22+ years ago as a way to cover my expenses, coindentally when the kids came along and I needed to plan for their needs, college, etc. Unlike the big guys I simply charge a fixed daily fee for my services intended to cover my expenses. My tours usually cost approx $1,000 - $2,000 less per person than the big operators depending on the length of tour, which can add up if you're riding 2-up.

I'm at the point now where roughly 1/3 of my tour members are repeats. I take anywhere from 40 - 55 people per year spread over the 6 tours depending on whether they're on board for one tour or linking tours. I've been going for so long that I rarely need to use a GPS. I truly love riding in the Alps and sharing my enjoyment of them with other riders. There are no bad roads but some are better than others. While I have a general route in mind I always pick the roads that I would want to ride, or that show something unique about the Alps, or that tour members sometimes request to go over etc - very flexible.

I did a day-ride up to Vermont a last week with a couple of riders, coincidentally both Alps Tours alumni (they didn't know each other prior to the VT ride). Riders like those 2 could give you an idea of what my tours are like. They're both planning to come back.

All this talk of passes made me think of this one.
This one is in the Julian Alps just outside Austria to the South and apparently the highest in Slovenia. I had great hopes for the ride over the Vrsic but after what seemed like an eternity of low cloud and drizzle the hairpins were then transformed from hairy to blummin very hairy when they decided to pave them with granite setts.

Yep, been there during nice weather once, still very bumpy there... great scenery though (crossed over to Italy, looped back to AuSTria from there ...)
