I live on the Canadian prairies so I need a bit more wind protection! I tried a Clearview Shield out of the US that proved to be less than perfect. It had pressure relief vents in it which whistled if the wind hits them right. It also reflects back some nasty road noise at a certain height at highway speed. The space between the bottom of the screen and the front cowl is also about a half inch more than the original, letting even more air through. I gave it several months to try to get used to it, but no go. So I took it off and put the original back. Has anyone tried the windshield for sale by Bike Quip out of the UK? It looks nice and they make some great claims. Any other brands I should be researching?

Thanks! Dan

Go to Forums at the top of this page, > ST1300 Tech > Windshields. Or, if you have an 1100 go to that forum and windshields. There will be lots of info there. This has been a frequently asked question.

There have been some questions about Calsci's quality in the recent past. I liked mine (1300 and VStrom) and bought two from him (I think his name is Mark). But he might have retired and given his business to his son. That kind of thing often changes everything.

Try Slipscreen from U.K.
Much better than oem and calsci for me, I`m 184cm.

I have a bike-quip screen and I didnt find much difference from stock, as far as protection/noise. What I did find was that after the first ride, I had star shaped marks within the screen. They look like stone chips in a windshield, except there are no marks on the face of the screen. These "fractures" (sorry, cant think of a proper term) are within the screen. They werent there before the first ride.

Stress fractures? Flaws in the original sheet of plastic?

I have to say that I am pretty happy with my clearview GT medium. After much research,,, my first choice would have been the more expensive Cee Bailey (no longer available),,, but the clearview was on sale for significantly less. I ordered it without the holes,,, as I thought those would be noisy. I had been raking my oem shield (about an extra 1/2") to push more air up the back thus largely reducing back pressure. And I have done the same with the clearview,, for the same good effect. The clearview does reflect a bit more engine and road noise,, as it is bigger,,, but it offers more wind protection. It's material is very strong,,, remains clear,, with no scratches and little distortion. And, it was about half the price of the Cee B.

I run mine almost all the way down,,, preferring to look over the shield. How do you use yours ?? CAt'

I have the National Cycle Slipstreamer and am about as happy as I might expect to be. A little taller and wider at the top and bottom, which enlarges the pocket of protection. I like it fine. My wife who's an infrequent passenger and not terribly good at describing what she's experiencing just says "I don't like it as much when it's up. It pushes me into your back"

Based on everyone's concern over the long-term health of the windshield mechanism, I minimize the the 'up/down' movement at speed. Some have said these larger windshields accelerate its demise and I don't doubt the impact of the greater load these larger screens produce.

that's as strong a description of back pressure as you are likely to hear. First time I have heard it expressed by a pillion though. A couple of days ago,,, I decided to see what it was like to raise my screen all the way,,, as it had been years since I had done so. First thing I noticed was the huge back pressure,, as there is no avoiding it at that height. 2nd thing was the visual distortions of looking through the screen. I lowered it down again,,, after 30 seconds,,, and I am likely good for another couple of years,,,, CAt'

Hmmm, mine fitted straight on, but the one from calsci I had to trim the holes a bit.
Is it far off?

2 years ago, I bought a VStream (U$152 on Amazon) 19 inches, same height as the factory shield and I really like it.
I am 5.7 and I used the bracket lowest position.
Less back pressure, a lot quieter, better shoulders protection and less buffeting.
I was a worrying a little about the increased width of the top of the VStream shield, but it is adding more pressure on the front wheel and this is an upgrade by itself.
The bike feel more planted on the road.
Maybe you can give it a try ...

Sorry Peter, just now saw your reply...
I am not sure what they are. I thought I had seen people talking about these marks, but I am not 100% on that. I will try to get pics up soon

I think, but I am not positive, that you can see stress lines in some plastics with polarized light. Maybe sunglasses? Rotate the glasses while looking thru them. Stress lines show up as colored lines like a rainbow. But if your 'shield cracked, that might have relieved the stress.

I started by replacing my stock shield with a Cal-sci screen . It was okay but not great so I bought a Bike Quip shield . When I first put the Bike Quip on it made a horrendous screaming noise from the air flowing under it . Instead of putting it back in the box and filing it under " Bad Ideas " I placed the Cal-Sci on top of it , traced the Cal-Sci vent pattern onto the the Bike Quip and cut the holes out with a Dremel and I've been using it ever since . The noise is gone . There's no buffeting and I like the look of it .

WOW! I guess the next time I ask a question here, I should check to see if there is an answer in less than a year and a half! Thanks for the info everyone. I am still using the original screen but am still interested in changing it.. The V-Stream seems like a great choice except i find that they look funny. The poly carbonate material is better than acrylic though

Can you attach a picture of what you did?
