Ironbutt Montreal-Sarnia and back

I'm starting to think about a first attempt on an Ironbutt, Saddlesore 1000 miles / 1600 km.
Christian, are you still on vacation?
The last time that we spoke, you mentioned possibly doing this SS1000 in October while you were on vacation.

Just curious to know what you have decided.

i want to do an all Canadian SS1600k, won't happen until late next year in June to maximize day light hours and i may follow the Sarnia route

If you actually live at DTW (view must be great but I'm sure the neighbors are loud!), wouldn't it be easier/better to start in Windsor?

not really but crossing the blue water bridge is a little easier, less traffic plus i like Port Huron
Ahhh... Gotcha!
It's been a long while since I've been/lived in the Detroit area and I forgot what a pain it can be to cross the Ambassador bridge (or the tunnel). I've crossed at Port Huron-Sarnia a couple of times in the last few years, and it was definitely easier now that I think about it.

now days you can't take a motorcycle through the tunnel

Hey Andrew ! :D

I'm getting back to work this week, on thursday, after 5 1/2 weeks off.
My wife and I had went camping in Sandbanks and Long Point Provincial Park, in Ontario.
So, I saw what it was to go thru the greater Toronto Area, on the 401.
Of course, I was hauling the popup camper, behind my Grand Caravan, but... man.... bumper to bumper. stop and go. stop and go. few minutes without moving... for hours.
It took us about 3-4 hours just to do that section, about 160 km long (100 miles).
But.... I was glad to drive along the 401 and go thru the greater Toronto area and see what it was.

It is a bit sad that, between camping trips, while I was home, I only ride my bike once or twice.
The weather during that period was not terrible, and I had other things that kept me away from the ST.

Anyway. Now, as you know, it is time to put the ST in storage for winter. That is what I'll do tomorow.

But, for the IronButt, I definatelly like the 401, and the "OnRoute" rest area system, every 45 minutes or so. And the route is also nice on the eastern ontario part.
Also, it is a relatively speedy highway (traffic runs at 115 kmh / 70 mph ).
So, in the long run (16-18 hours), you can travel the distance in a bit less time.... and be back home maybe an hour earlier. That counts when you are exausted at the end of the day.

So, what I'll do, next year, I will simply avoid the greater Toronto area, as you and others suggested. Too much risk to loose too much time there.
From where I live (Deux-Montagnes), I will go down the 401, and turn back at NewCastle, back to montreal area (1000 km), and then, up to LaPocatiere, after Quebec, along the 20, and back home (1707 km).
Probably during a week day, in june.

I miss our nice ride, Andrew.
That was fun.
We have to repeat that next summer.

Didn't know that. I was bikeless when I lived there (and it was almost 25 years ago :p ).
as Jeff stated its been 25 years or more, back then i had a mac system on my bike and the last thing i wanted to hear was it in a tunnel so i always took the bridge

I’ve taken the ferry across from Sombra Ontario to Marine City Michigan $6.00.Easy breezy customs stop. Thars for your future iron but, but.
