While at ArkanSTOC this year I saw Randy's aka @treemuncher audio set up. He has a uniden/cardo/zumo/phone setup that is all integrated with no delay in getting notifications.

I think I got a bad Sena 20s as it was drenched last year in pouring rain and stopped working, Sena replaced with a refurbished unit that was cutting out this year in dens fog. I don't know if they gave me a different/new unit or simply refurbished mine. Anyway, I decided to try Cardo so went with the Edge.

My previous setup was:
Phone --> Zumo XT <-- Sena 20s (splitter cable to connect earbuds and radar detector OUT cable to Sena mount)

This gave me phone/music (via mp3 or phone) gps instructions and instant RD alerts.

Cons:
- Still have a cord going to RD
- Sena not waterproof
- Music via XT would sometimes pause or stop, speed up or slow down (MP3) after gps instructions or phone calls
and when that happens it takes rebooting headset, gps or both and then getting back where you were which takes
lots of manual movements to do all of that. Sometimes the music would pause/stop for no reason.
- no OK Google unless you press the phone button on the headset - I think the 50k now allows that.

My current set up:
Zumo XT <--(as gps pairing)-- Edge -(as phone pairing)-> Phone <-- Uniden R4

For Uniden you need to download the Highway Radar app, I think for some Escort RDs you can use their Escort Live app

For the Edge - I added a 3.5mm splitter cord inside the helmet to attach the speakers and have a 3.5mm female connector for ear buds.

Pros:
- No more cord
- Waterproof
- Music comes from the phone for this setup and never stops or pauses
- Answer a call simply by saying 'Answer' or ignore w/'Ignore'
- OK Google works
- The Highway radar app allow crowdsourced integration like Waze
- RD alerts appear to be instant and w/app there are many settings and even the phone screen can flash different colors for high priority alerts.

Cons:
- During a phone call, GPS instructions mute out everything else and there is a gap of 2-3 seconds before the phone input is back. So, if on a call, you will not hear the conversation until the instructions are presented and the gap.
- The priority is GPS - Phone - Intercom so GPS will always be on top. Makes sense since staying on route should be the most important thing. I just wish it would overlay and not just cut off phone input. But, I can live with that.

I think there's a way around the Con if you don't use the BT Radar Detector as that uses up one of the phone's BT chanels. I've tried that before using a splitter like with my original setup but I think there were issues with that on the Cardo and since I've been trying to get rid of that RD cord for years, I prefer this setup.

My friends with 1250s don’t have much good to say about the current state of affairs regarding displays and electronic integration. Seems like a game of whack-a-mole not only between rides but during a ride.

None of this uses the bikes tft at all. So will work on any bike.

Like I said if you use the mapping display on the TFT or don't use it the various electronic devices don't play well together. If you don't use the BMW mapping and add your own GPS it's another fire drill. I had to listen to two riding buddies on1250s complain yesterday for 280 miles.... unless the intercom dropped out when one or the other device overlaid comm with silence until we reset it.

Maybe a solo rider can deal with it better :roflmao:

Yeah, just don't join the circle lol

I avoid riding in the rain and have had zero issues with my Sena. :giggle:
A woman on another forum said something that has stuck with me for years. "If you don't ride in the rain in Seattle, you don't ride." Truer words were never spoken. :D

I delete the BT connections to my BMW during the summer months. The Zumo XT connects to the Sena BT headset using the GPS BT channel. The phone connects to the Zumo XT. That uses both BT channels on the Zumo XT and gives GPS directions/Music/Phone.

The Uniden R7 connects to the Sena BT headset on the phone BT channel through a BT transmitter. That uses up the Sena's two BT channels. Unfortunately or fortunately, that means I can't connect to anyone else without dropping the RD warnings.

If you're interested in the BT transmitter, here is one similar to what I'm using. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08G8Q7NXZ?language=en_US

The biggest limitation I'm seeing on this, is I need three BT channels, and only two are possible.

Why Uniden can't integrate BT into their new(er) RD's is beyond me. I currently run an R7, Sena 50S, Garmin XT. DR is wired. I use it mostly on the 1000XR, as she has a nasty habit of sometimes wandering into felony speeding levels, all on her own......

It's frustrating, but the RD manufacturers aren't building detectors for the motorcycle crowd. They are looking at the car crowd...which doesn't need BT or weatherproofing.

It's getting there just slow, I'm only aware of uniden r4 and r8 and some escorts.

I gave up on RD's (Valentine) 10 years ago because of all the false alarms due to motion sensors, stationary speed signs, lane departure systems, laser CC, etc.

Have the new iterations dealt with this sufficiently to make a RD worthwhile again?

There are all kinds of filters in the new ones for car radars, signs, traffic lights, etc. Still get some false signals but it's better than the old units. Has saved me many times.

This might be a dumb question, but I use a Sena 50S and a Uniden for warning beeps & visual symbols, and I’ve never missed a warning no matter my speed. So, what’s the point of using Bluetooth alerts when the audible beeps work just fine?

I use ear buds or foam ear plugs so I wouldn't hear the alerts from the unit otherwise.

Just checked the pricing:eek::eek:
Here in the GWN, $1,000 give or take for a high end one.
But I guess if you factor in the impact on insurance, it may pencil out. Need to look at them a bit closer.

My Uniden R7 is great. Phenomenal comes to mind. I had a different model before my accident and I just got used to where the false alarms would come up. First, I don't get false alarms. Second, when the R7 senses a repeat of a signal in the same location like a grocery store, it automatically mutes the RD the next time it comes up. It is much quieter than my earlier RD.

I can't hear my RD. So it is either a BT transmitter or a warning light like the Marc Parnes visual alert. http://www.marcparnes.com/Visual_Alert.htm Relying on seeing the display change is a perfect way to ensure you'll always get a ticket.
