There is an almost brand new 2017 ST1300PA for sale on the San Francisco Craigslist. This bike has not been used as a police bike - it has the heavier duty suspension and brakes as well as a higher output alternator that come with the police motorcycles. Original owner with a warranty until 2029. It only has 700 miles on it!

What maintenance record? It only has 700 miles - not even broke-in.
8 years old, and only 700 miles.
And is that a barn with hay next to it, or a carport or shed with weeds?
While it appears to have the right side switch housing, and PD risers, it also has a passenger seat?
And non PD saddlebag crash bars, and no crash bars up front?
I like the “never used in police work “
Which means it could have been a crash test dummy training bike :rofl1:
Bet ya a donut the brake and clutch system will have to be completely gone through and much replaced to make it road worthy again.

The Honda Care expires in 2029, which implies that it was purchased new in 2021 (at the earliest). That is basically the same thing I did, 2016 model purchased "in the crate" new in November 2020.

I like the fuel tank lid ram mount. I haven't seen that before.

I assume it was never owned by a police department (like mine). There were no bars/holes/lights installed. Just the radio cover and the above the mirror light brackets when I bought mine.

I wonder if the sub frame was cut for the passenger seat install?
I don't know, that is a good question. I changed my subframe for the passenger seat (currently have a smuggler installed). Supposedly the only seat you are supposed to use with the cut brackets is the Corbin single piece dual seat? But, if you didn't know that I guess the passenger seat might stay on there as long as you were sitting on the front seat. ;)

To your previous point, I did change my SMC. It had not failed, but - it did have oddities when stopped with the rear brake pedal "dropping" and every now and then I thought I heard the rear brake slightly dragging. I figured better safe than sorry and I don't regret changing it.

With the way the "rack" is set up with those front bolts and the end ones missing, that would be a good question!

If I had "playing" money, I'd be tempted! ;)

Question, when you say it didn’t fail, please explain.
Was it because the bore was clean, and the piston appeared to move freely? Or because it passed both the SMC function tests?
Both of these can be misleading to someone not familiar with the system.
Did you remove the rear line(s) and verify if the cartridge was clogged or had debris behind it?
Just curious.

I have not had a “2016 crate bike” come through in the past few months.
There are still a few sitting around at various dealerships and storage places.
The sad thing about these “crate” bikes is while they were selling for just a hair under 10k out the door, I had 3 of them brought to me last year, and all 3 needed new clutch slave cylinders and secondary master cylinders, new batteries, and new tires .
I hate it when bikes die a slow death from sitting in some showroom or storage place for 8-9 years.

Well, it passed the "lay on your side, roll the rear tire and manually squeeze the SMC with your hand test", no issues there. But, looking at the rear pads at 5000 miles and they were more than half gone, I assume it was dragging at some point while riding? Or maybe that is just normal wear.

I didn't look that closely at the part I removed (sorry), I just replaced the SMC and bled the system. I haven't noticed any issues since.

Once again, I don't know if you would consider it a "failure" compared to some of the stories. Maybe I was just hypercritical of it possibly failing. It was something that I just couldn't stop thinking about on every ride, so for peace of mind I changed it.

Or…..it was purchased for a training bike, and they didn’t want to put all the expensive lights and LEO package on it etc.
First thing I would do is remove the tip over cover and see if it’s been down on its side.

Or was purchased by a civilian and so never kitted out as a police motor. I don't recall seeing a black STP. Well except for this one. At one point it (2015/16?) seemed Honda started advertising B&W STPs based on a particular model year. I thought I saw posts about Non-kitted STPs available to civilians in the last model years where it wasn't possible before.I suppose if you "knew a guy..." I think someone even mentioned one being on a showroom floor (not in police kit).

So where does the outfitting of a crate STP take place? The dealer? Third Party? Usually the PD/SO buying the bike has their people do the radio and any other electrical stuff like a shotgun lock. Maybe like Long Beach Honda? I'm guessing the same applies to EMS lighting. The crash bars? Does it ship with the police box and appropriate subframe?

The local PD and SO get H-Ds and they and their contractors turn them into street enforcement bikes. I don't know how this may or may not be different from something a civilian can walk in and buy off the floor. They were ordered with some level of performance enhancements: Stage 1/2/3. These may be options available to anyone ordering an H-D.

This STP looks very clean to be any department mule. If the 700mi is accurate it doesn't seem likely it was ever owned by a PD/SO.
