You're talking about a reasonable/functional rear suspension mod.
I was thinking of the rust buckets with cool tires and the tall shackles that permitted you to see between the top of the rear tire and bottom of the frame. There were many more of those.

So very true. Unfortunately it is also true that there is such a thing as to much power for the traction available. If you can't increase the latter than you need to decrease the former. Sometimes less is more.

So true! in the late 60s competing in local autocross with a (Frog Eye) Austin Healey Sprite, my only real competitor was a Mini Cooper.
