Running issue after laying down ST1100!

I recently replaced a used up T32 with a 170/60 BT020 due to a stupid cheap price that I could not pass up. Have always previously used the proper 160/70 rear . Seems to be just fine other than a bit harder to het o the center stand.

Glad your bike is back to normal running.
Ok that sounds good, thank you Dean appreciate that.

I do have a query about fuel filters, do you use pattern or genuine and does this make a difference. I live literally down the road to David Silvers and t everything from them and I always go pattern but given this latest experience on carbs that were recently cleaned and a new fuel filter I am wondering if the fuel filters are no good. Any thoughts, or maybe you use completely different fuel filters.

David Silver is pretty good at sourcing reasonable replacement parts. The filter on the ST1100 is so easy to get to and so easy to replace, you can keep an eye on it, whatever you get.

Can I have one more question. With out starting a controversial debate, I know this has been covered many times, but using Bridgestone T32 on 1100’s does the going up one size of width for rear make a negative difference as it did on my 96 VFR. Also do you guys run GT spec T32 on both front and back or just the back? Have you tried T33’s.

Take a look on the Bridgestone Website to see what tyres they recommend for the ST1100. For one tyre, oddly, they found that the non GT spec worked better with the ST1100. I've got the email they sent me as a reply when I queried it, but it wasn't the T32 , so is largely irrelevant.

I don't know about going one size wider. Why ?

The T32s on the 1300 are the best tyres for even wear and for not squaring off that I've ever had. My brother has them on his 1100 and he is experiencing the same.

The T33 is supposed to last longer, but they were not available when I replaced my tyres in February. I don't think that the size for the ST1100 is available yet - but check it has been a while since I loooked, but I thought they were bringing out the next sizes next year. But when it is, they are not making different tyres (GT or non-GT) for different weight bikes. They say that the charactersitics of the new formula seem to work well with both.

Ok great thank you John. Will talk to Bridgestone when the time comes and hopefully more sizes will be available and hopefully not too expensive.

With the final fade out of the trusty G547/548 I'm facing the same issue here...
I seriously hope they'll come up with a tire capable to endure up to 12,000km/7,500miles again...
Otherwise I'll be facing serious vacation plan/touring problems...

I'm on it over here since last year already...
Emailed Bridgestone Europe who don't even care to answer...
The Exedra is still listed on their JP and US sites, but got moved to the "cruiser" section...
Obviously its still in production, so its their genius EC marketing dept decision of doubling the turnover/sales by limiting the range to products with such providing only half the lifespan... or such...
T31 and T32 do well on the GF's NT700VA, but that's a bit lighter with less horsepower... and I need a 110/80 front...

I would have thought there is still a large market for the ST1100 sized tyres and therefore they would be a bit more sorted. Will try and find out.

It was the BT023 standard tyre that they recommended for the ST1100 rather than the GT. That is over 12 years ago. I queried it - because there had been a discussion in our Pan Club about it. It is not relevant to the BT020 or the T30 to T33s, but it is interesting anyway.

Quote from Bridgesone's email reply: 25 April 2013

The BT-023 GT was indeed produced for heavier bikes but that does not mean it will work to the required standard on all heavy bikes. It actually works very well on some much lighter bikes too. All tyres have to be tested and one cannot just assume that because the bike is heavy the GT spec is the tyre to use.

The standard is not “just approved for the ST1100 because we do not make a GT version!” It’s approved because we have tested it and it passes our stringent test criteria. We do not just recommend a pair of tyres without testing them first or because another variant is not made in a particular size.

It’s not just about weight, it’s about the whole make-up of the bike, like the quality of the suspension. Tyres have their own unique self-damping properties and sometimes the standard tyre will suit a particular bike better, even if it’s a heavy bike!

The ST1300 is a different bike with a different weight, different aerodynamics and different weight distribution. It’s a different bike! They cannot be compared as like for like. As advised, just because one tyre works on the ST1300 does not mean it will work on the ST1100 and this can be said for many other bikes and their varying models.
The T33 - if / when it becomes available, says "One spec to fit both light- and heavyweight tyres" (I think that they mean 'bikes' !!)

But I note that the site is still listing the T31 and T32 on the UK site for all ST1100s and the ST1300 - even though the size for the ST1300 should be available now.
But they are sometimes slow in updating the sites.

It will be good to find out, will have a go next week.

I use the BT020 Bias on the rear of my ST1100s (the one for the BMWk1200lt - correct size).
I run a BT3x GT (what's avaliable) on the front.
Been using that combination on my ST1100s for years.
But we do not have MOT over here. ;)

Curious to know what kind of mileage that you get Phil.
My Brother in-law had two BMW K1100LT's. The LT is a heavy bike as well and it was amazing how many miles that tire would last.

I usually get close to 10,000 miles out of it - that will get me to Alaska and back! ;)
By then the front is pretty worn and usually a little scalloped so I replace both of them.

Hi, got in touch with Bridgestone regarding T33, the 120 is currently available and the others, 110, 160 and 170 will be available in January 2026. I did ask for prices but did not provide, if I find out I’ll let you know. The above is for UK.
