ST1300 - Date Code 2018 Tires with Low Miles

I have a set of Bridgestone Battlax T31 Tires on my ST1300 with Date Codes 2018 that were installed the same year. At most, I have 2000 miles on them. Bike has been garaged when not ridden. Ride em, or change em?

Stored away from sunlight helps. I'd give them a thorough visual inspection, especially around the rims, and check the valve stems.

I have the same year date code tires on a 2003 ST non ABS I just bought. I have 5 bikes and will just use it on days that it is not raining, or I might just just get a new one and just swap this onto my 2005 ABS ST. The tire looks good and still feels soft and was always in a garage.

Yikes! the price has skyrocketed on the T33 Battlax Tires. To purchase and install through a shop in Myrtle Beach, SC is $850. Can buy a pair from Cycle Gear for $450. And, they charge $30 per tire to change. But, You have to bring them the wheels.

I have never removed the wheels and do not know how to do it. Is this difficult for a rookie to remove and install them back?

Absolutely not. If you can pick up a wrench, you can do it. To remove both at the same time, you will need either jack stands or a jack (hyd or scissor) and some way of stabilizing the bike (bracing it). Key point - mark the outside of the wheel spacers with a dab of paint or marker so that you don't put them back inverted.

I bought a cheap harbor freight tire changer and have changed about 40 tires with it and a few tire spoons and bars. I also use a ratchet strap to hold the tire.

2018 tires that were stored properly and with low miles are fine. Obviously do a visual check first, if you're not sure then go on the safe side and swap them. I'm not worried until after 10 years for my tires.

Well, all I can say is in 2024
I got a used ST 1300 that was a 2007 model that had two different tires on it: one dated 2010,
and one dated 2011.

I got this bike nearly one year ago November 2024. The rubber did not seem badly cracked, I estimate they had half of their tread life left on them when I got the bike, and I believe the bike was stored indoors it's entire life, but these tires were nonetheless 14 and 13 years old.

What I did: I used them up on the road!

I put several thousand more miles on it and used the rest of their tread life up.
I never felt like they were losing traction on the road except for the obvious circumstances such as riding over tar-filled cracks on hot summer days or crossing over painted lines on the road in the rain.

PERHAPS they wore out at a more rapid rate during the last couple months of my using them then they did during the first couple months but I really attribute that to me getting more comfortable on the bike and being more aggressive in my turning and braking, rather than riding it like a little old lady on her way to church.

Going to need a rear tire later this season and i have noticed (not having bought one for 2 years now) the 170/60/17 is a rare find. I am seeing notes here and there about the usability of 180/55/17. Can anyone on the thread speak to the reliability of fit for the ST13?
