ST1300 Parking Lights Change Help

Parking lights? Do you mean the running lights and brake lights? Are you replacing one bulb or changing all to LEDs?

I suspect that he means the two small running lights that are in the headlamp assembly.

If so, I changed mine by removing the mirror covers and going in through one of the holes behind there with a pair of long nose pliers. I may have also removed the mirrors but I don't think so, it was a long time ago and I can't remember. I do know for certain that I didn't remove any tupperware other than the mirror covers.

Yes the two 5W position lights described above.

I wouldn't call them parking lights as they have no ability to function as such as most cars do. Well at least on NA ST1300s. Maybe in Japan? UK? EU? My 305/CL77 had the ability to turn on the tail light when in the ACC position but it was a battery killer. I don't remember any of my later other Hondas doing that. But you know — the little gray cells. None of mine had position lights in the front until the ST.

The IGN switch's ACC position doesn't do anything for NA bikes that I know of. Maybe it energizes the quartet harness along with the IGN position? Maybe controls power to the radio option? I dunno. Still not a great idea for the SST1300's battery.

Anyway I don't remember doing anything special other than carefully reaching in and around grabbing the rubber socket and pulling it out to change the lights. Care has to be taken putting the bulbs and socket back in. Being rubber they don't have the solid structure of any of the bike's other light sockets. So it's possible to put the bulb too deep into the socket and miss the contacts. It's also possible to squeeze the bulb out of the socket and spit it into the headlight housing when trying to reinstall the socket. Then it needs to be retrieved requiring stiff wire and some tape and lots of patience and dexterity. Fine motor skills wouldn't hurt. Or some luck. DAMHIKT.

Other than powering some circuits in the quartet harness I have never actually made an attempt to see what else the ACC position energizes and have never looked at that circuit in the wiring diagram. If there is no quartet harness installed the only thing that I know of that it does is give you the ability to operate the four-way emergency flashers.

Yes. the small running lights. I saw them referred to as parking lights

What are the two small yellow lights above the headlights called?

I am a newbie at changing light bulbs. I had F2 LED headlights installed that have a harness attached to them. The person who did it for me, stuffed the controller into a inside pocket area to the outside of the lights. The left side ( as looking at bike from front ) low beam stopped working. High beam works. And the small running light above it is broken off.

I moved to Myrtle Beach, SC and called all of the Honda Dealers within 150 miles. None are willing to work on a bike more than 10 years old.

So, I reach the headlights from below. Not sure how much leverage I will have with my big hands.

Took the mirror housing off and can barely fit my finger in the hole to feel for the running light. Not sure how needle nose pliers will get in there at that right angle.

Anyway, I appreciate the help and advice. Just don't want to take all of the plastic off, like I saw in a YT Video.

Position lights. What that actually do on NA bikes is a mystery to me. They don't work as parking lights on those bikes but maybe in other countries. With some work they could be wired to run with the IGN off or from the ACC position.

Pro tip upgrade...

Attach a small super-magnet to the end of that wire with hot glue. The wires on my bulbs are magnetic and this worked amazing at retrieving them... yeah both fell in at the same time. :(

Jay, at some point, if you keep the 1300 you are going to have to learn how to take off the tupperware. When I changed my headlight bulbs it took me about 20 min for the first one and maybe 1 minute for the second. I couldn't figure out how to get the bail removed, and I had the shop manual. This was with all the tupperware off providing plenty of access. Poking around blind trying to get those tiny light bulbs out is a surefire way to drop them inside the headlight housing.

Yes, both can be changed with the fairing on, but it will be more difficult for someone with no detailed knowledge of the bike.

No kidding.
"The last one position is for PARK, which turns the tail light ON and allows withdrawal of the ignition key. Obviously, if you switch the bike OFF by turning the ignition switch key to the PARK position, the tail light stays ON until the battery dies."

I know this post is now a few months old, but I ended up here looking for answers to exactly this conundrum. Why are there "parking lights" fitted at all when they can't be used as such? I have a UK ST1300, and those parking/position lights only come on with the headlight. Seems a bit pointless.

Likely a safety feature to keep the headlight assy still lit, hence visible to other road users at the instance a main bulb went out...

On (older) cars you could see the position light in the front bumper coming on (so still marking the width of the vehicle), once a low beam H4 filament in the main headlight failed...
(on the ST1100 you've one 5W position light bulb in the bottom of the headlight assy, still illuminating the whole reflector/glass in case the main beams are out...)

The actual presence of a "parking light" (rotate to position [P] and remove key, while having the steering locked, and mentioned 5W front + taillights on) was a unique feature on <'95 ST1100 models for Austria...
Would need to research if such was ever implemented in the ST1300 versions...
I do recall the early, non ABS 1300's having "regular" switch-pods, so the RHS featured a full light switch [OFF-P-LOW], plus a normal, ergonomic plausible [PASS] switch on the LHS for your index finger...
