I recently purchased two OEM key blanks for my NT1100. My dealer wasn't able to cut them (really?) so I went to a local locksmith, with an excellent reputation.

I think I got a key nerd, because he said it was a little different that most. He then he proceeded to take a close blank and after about about 5 minutes of reshaping, put it in the duplicator and produced a key the worked perfectly. I add this, so you understand why I don't think this is a locksmith problem. BTW, he gave me that one for free, since he was just going to throw it away.

He then put the OEM blank in the duplicator and copied it, but it wouldn't even go into the keyway on the motorcycle . He told me what the problem was, but since I didn't recognize the terms so I can't say what. But he said it seemed to him it was probably a quality control issue. He said he could make it work, but he'd have to work it manually. He did (no extra charge, even though it took several tries) it did, so I have my spare keys now.

So really just an FYI, if you're getting replacement keys, be aware.

I had a similar problem with Honda key blanks. The 'locksmith' made two copies from a new Honda key. One worked and the other only in the IGN.

I will say in the locksmiths defense they recently bought out an excellent smithy who had done nothing but excellent quality work. These two are probably who you buy locks to protect against. They probably had PFNs too. (But I digress...)

Someone (maybe from here) said the keys for the ST (1300 for me) should be "cut from the shoulder". No idea. Maybe it means the shoulder (upper edge of the key?) should be flush against some part of the machine? Don't know. Neither did they. I suspect it's become some kind of money laundering front but you didn't hear it from me.

There were one or two someones here (before The Big Data Loss) who knew a lot about cutting keys and even did so for members using the digits on the metal tag. They also used the Ilco blanks — stronger stuff than the pot metal keys and blanks Honda used/uses.

My kingdom for a key nerd.
