🤣 Funny!

OK, this discussion is something I don't get... as technically tipping is supposed to be voluntary...

So operators playing the guilt trip on patrons for not paying their employees enough salary?
And if the waiter serves five tables he then makes like $ 100,-/hour tax free? 🤔

Yes, we do tip over here; porters, taxi drivers, waiters and waitresses, hairdressers (tipping craftsmen* came somehow out of fashion for unknown reasons... :cautious:)
We give like 5~15%, and its not forced upon patrons & clients... waiters earn € 16,- ~ 20,-/hour over here...
a sign/message like above would be received as rude and offending... I for one would leave without ordering and never go there again, period...

*I tip an automotive mech like € 5,- for a "small" job like annual inspection, or swapping winter<>summer tires... after an actual service I'll give at least € 10,-...

Ask for the manager. Tell him / her 'if you cannot afford to pay your staff, you cannot afford to operate a business. Then leave!

my thought exactly, but if the "service fee" is only a couple of bucks I'm not going to stop going there altogether if I otherwise like the place.

And it always makes me wonder if the service fee is only a couple bucks, wouldn't it be less offensive to just raise the menu prices slightly? Seems like really stupid management, but there's a lot of stupid going around these days.

Tipping in general has started to be abusive as soliciting it has become ever more aggressive. I don't understand the logic of a higher percentage tip is required now because the price of everything has gone up and people who work in the service industry are struggling. The price of the restaurant meal has also gone way up. Since their tip is based on a percentage of the bill the amount of their tip has also gone up.

Increasing numbers of places add the service charge to the bill automatically. If the tip is added to the bill up front it is no longer a tip- it is the new price of the meal.

The term "TIP" is an acronym that means "To Incent Performance", which means that it is a gift to recognize and reward good service received, and it is intended to encourage the server to continue to provide good service.

It was never intended to be, and should not now be, an integral part of a server's compensation.

...and FWIW, I totally agree with the sentiment that if a business cannot afford to compensate their employees properly, they cannot afford to be in business and they should get stuffed with their snotty "guilt trip" signage.

I will not pay a mandatory "service fee" even if it is a place I have gone to for years! If the business cannot afford their expenses, they should raise their rates, and I will most likely pay the increased rate. I will not let them try to put their hand in my pocket because of their greed or lack of business acumen. If someone owns or operates a business they should not try to tell their customers to cover their business expenses. After final bargaining for a new car purchase, I tell the dealership "Now deduct the dealership fee or I WILL WALK AWAY. I have gotten out of the door but never was able to leave the lot before it was deducted.

Plus the proliferation of tips to places where they are not warranted, e.g., retail cashiers. You pushed a few buttons, I'm not sure you deserve extra $. (I appreciate that's an inflated exaggeration and retail service is not fun. But my inner grumpy old man took over and the outer grumpy old man grunted in agreement)
