Gas tank blowed up !

I don’t think Honda ever built a 49 state non-California model. All ST1300s were CARB compliant.
Skimming over the fiche for a friend's '06 ST1300A (European Direct Sales), I cannot locate a charcoal canister...

 
A fuel tank needs a vent and a drain.... two hoses. Sometimes a drain hole beside the filler opening, and a pressure relief valve in the cap, or internally, a metal tube inside the tank ending up high above in the airspace at the top of the tank. Vent is likely similar.

It's like that on my CBF1000, no cannister. If I overfill even slightly, fuel will drain when on the sidestand or when the sun heats up the fuel.....

With cannister, if it gets saturated, may not run quite right until the fuel vapours get consumed.... I personally would get rid of the cannister and vent/drain directly to atmosphere as bikes without cannisters do.... unless I was in California.

When I built mine, I only used two hoses on the tank... fuel feed and return. The other nipples were left alone. No canister, no gas smell, no problems. :)

On that 2006 parts fitch, there’s no separate 49 state model listed anywhere. All US ST1300s were 50 state compliant. My original comment was regarding US bikes and is accurate.

I do recall however, Honda bragging about the bike being compliant with the toughest emissions requirements in the world when it was originally introduced. That way it simplified their manufacturing process having only one emissions version to worry about. At the time I think California still had the strictest emissions standards.

If the bike has vapor canister it will be located on the right side under the main faring above and forward of the foot peg.

Yup,,, that's it. When the bike is running,,, the evap solonoid valve is open,,, and vapors from the cannister (larger hose) flow through the valve,, and up to a 5-way tee in the valley,, where it splits off to each throttle body to be burned. When the bike is switched off, the valve closes,,, and vapors are collected in the evap charcoal cannister,, and saved there for the next start up,,, according to my fsm. So it is not clear why pressure built up while my bike was running steadily,, for over 40 minutes. Since reassembly,, with Gordow's tank,,, the only other change has been to replace the old original evap can with a used unit. And now, there are zero pressure build up's occurring. Wait,,, maybe I had better go out for today's test ride. The grass can wait,,,, again,,,, cheers,, CAt'
 
None seen,,, although I have not done any disassembly there. I was out for another big ride today,,, and it seems to be operating normally,,, and actually better than ever. No leaks, seeps or odors,,,, touch wood,,, CAt'

How low on gas when the tank 'blowed" up?
 
When I left for the ride,,, I had 4 bars showing. And just before the "expansion event", the 3rd bar had winked out. So,,, about %35 fuel load (10 liters),,, and 19 liters of vapor space. CAt'

Means the upper tank was close to all vapor at "special operation" time. Quite the bomb!

  • The Cause: All fuel tanks need to breathe to handle expanding and contracting fuel and vapors. If the vent tube is pinched, blocked by debris, or if the check-valve in your gas cap fails, pressure has nowhere to go.
  • The Result: When the fuel and trapped vapors heat up, the pressure builds so severely that the tank will visibly expand or "balloon". When you open the gas cap, you will hear a sudden, forceful hiss or pop as the pressurized vapor escapes.
  • The Fix: Inspect and clear your vent lines. For bikes with an EVAP system (common in modern EPA-compliant bikes), a soaked charcoal canister from overfilling can block airflow. Many riders use a simple check-valve or a cap modification to restore normal venting.
