It's all context, for example if said 5 gallon pail were to tip over and spill its contents, it would be a HUGE 5 gallon pail....(or 18.92 litres in real measurement), if it were a 5 gallon pail at a rugby piss up, it would be a tiny 5 gallon pail

Canadian gallons are 20% larger than U.S. gallons.

A US gallon is smaller than a Canadian (Imperial) gallon. One US liquid gallon equals 3.785 liters, while a Canadian gallon equals 4.546 liters. Because of this 20% size difference, one US gallon is equal to approximately 0.83 Canadian gallons, and one Canadian gallon equals 1.20 US gallons.
