Park Outside Automotive Recalls

I just heard about this for the first time. Evidently, some hybrids can burst into flame when unattended (called 'a key off fire') due to the electronics in the car that are always on. NHTSA has created the "Park Outside" recall. Owners are told to park outside and away from structures. This has created a dilemma for folks who live in condos w/ large underground garages and people who own Hyundais that are easy to steal. These fires are different than the battery management fires in early EVs.

Manufacturers with problems include Hyundai, Kia, Jeep, and Lincoln.

Don't worry, some ICE cars have also had similar recalls, due to fuel system issues causing leaks. Ford Explorers have burned down a few garages already...

Why single out hybrids? 1.07 million ICE Jeeps and over 200,000 ICE Nissans are under recall for spontaneous combustion fire risk. Some I knew at work lost his house when his Nissan Murano caught fire in the garage in the middle of the night.

I'm guessing the issue is they were never installed. Jeez, back then seatbelts were a radical new technology.

The difference I suspect, is that "normal" car fires are serious, but can be put out. EV battery fires are several magnitudes worse.

In our neighborhood homeowners are not allowed to charge EVs inside your garage and are asked to park them outside the garage due to the difficulty in stopping a battery fire.

I was speaking with a volunteer fireman in a rural area. He said that EV battery fires take thousands of gallons of water to extinguish and are a real challenge for small rural fire departments, much more so than gasoline car fires. There are no hydrants in most of their territory so they have had to have a water tanker running back and forth non-stop to provide enough water to extinguish an EV battery fire. It can take up to 24 hrs. to fully extinguish he said.

They have now resorted to buying a shipping container that they have made waterproof. They stuff the EV in to the container, shut the door, and fill the container with water and let it sit there on the side of the road until the next day. He said that there is no concern over causing further damage to the vehicle by doing this because there is nothing but scrap left after an EV catches fire.

Gee whiz. The issue is your house burning down around you in the middle of the night because a piece of machinery caught fire. Did you build your house in such a manner that it’s easy to put out?
