Knock Sensor problem

Dear all i'm a new member. First of all my regards to all the ST 1300 user a really fantastic bike. I have a 2002 version and for my opinion a bike with a line that is also beautiful today. Fron sometime I have a problem with the knock sensor and when i achive little bit more then 4000 rpm switch on the FI light, and the bike reduce little bit the power. I don't know if someone have already speck about the knock sensor problem. I read on internet that there is a way to bypass the knock sensor using a Zombie Hack that means connect the 2 wire in the ECU of the 2 sensor with piezoelectric disk. There is someone that have done this modification and are able to explain me how to proceed? Best Regards
 
there's quite a bit on the subject on the site here and other honda forums concerning the knock sensor faults
there are a variety of possible non ECM related things you can check and will find on this and various other forums
it seems that late last year some pretty good progress was made with with respect to poor installation of op amps on specific modules of ECMs over a wide range of applications during a certain period
My situation is with a 2003 bike that I bought with 4700 hundred original miles
I dismantled inspected and (didn't even have to clean) checked everything associated
In my case, it's the modual; not going to start bastardizing connections and so forth to let anyone say yeah well, look what you did to it
Now that Honda knows that we know what they've known all along I think something like a recall will happen
call it a hunch

I like your enthusiasm but I suggest that you don't hold your breath while you wait.
The affected vehicles are to old and the defect is not a safety issue. As a result the transportation departments aren't interested and Honda has moved on and isn't going to spend money on these old machines.
 
I'm more than a little confused, @Chris09, the ST1300 is a discontinued model and Honda no longer supports it. For Honda to do a recall at this point in time would be a bit like Piper aircraft issuing a recall for the J3 Cub. It ain't gonna happen.

Can you explain what you mean by poor installation of op amps on specific modules of ECMs over a wide range of applications during a certain period. I don't understand.

@MaurizioMonti, standard trouble shooting before you opt for Andrew's link in post #4 includes checking for rodent damage to the wiring harness and swapping the sensors side to side to see if the code changes - this is detailed in Andrew's link.
 
there's a substantial difference between piper aircraft and Honda
Itll come about as recourse for the watercraft they stopped making in 2014 or thereabouts;
these watercraft failed to fall back to any reasonable ignition sequence that could have brought the machines under any degree of control or power that might have enabled the operators to mitigate the issue

Also check for wiring damage from the exhaust heat shields.
 
...... doesn't absolve the company of motor vehicles that they produced with safety issues
It's not a safety issue as far as the ST1300 is concerned. It's a performance issue that does not put anyone in peril. As a result no regulatory body cares about it and I highly doubt that Honda is going to spend any money or time on such an old model that had a relatively small sales volume.
 
In the spring I was sent a final notice to follow up on a factory recall and bring my vehicle into a dealership for two issues;
a passenger air bag and a passenger side mirror component of some sort (a mirror?)
The vehicle was fourteen years old
I don't know how far back a safety recall can go but certainly well beyond any warranty period
As of late, the first of the following three questions may have been answered and be verifiable concerning the ECMs
are there verifiable defects in components that may result in injury
are there vehicles still registered with said components
does the manufacturer still exist
Who knows anyone's guess

Hi Chris, unfortunately, I don't think there will be a recall campaign; for instance, my bike is a 2002 model, and Honda hasn't issued any recalls for it so far. The issue isn't necessarily the ECU itself, but rather potential damage to the wiring or connectors caused by heat—which, as you know, is a known problem with this bike. I tried removing the sensor connectors and soldering the wires directly to the sensors, but that didn't solve the problem (a fix recommended by a Honda dealer). I’ve read about a modification that involves bypassing the sensors (meaning you lose their monitoring function) by connecting a piezoelectric disc to the two sensor wires coming from the ECU; this tricks the unit by generating a constant AC signal, thereby preventing the FI warning light from coming on. I wanted to see if anyone here has already tried this solution.

The latest [apparent] success which is well laid out and documented on the GL1800 forum seems to indicate that the issue is the ECU itself, and this could be significant not only for the fact that the ECMs can be repaired
It could turn out [provable] that the ECMs had a manufacturing defect in the first place.
Not as a result of use, abuse or wear and tear; just a problem built in and waiting to happen.
As is pointed out, the issue probably doesn't meet the requirement for a recall in the majority of applications; unless you're that guy on the watercraft suddenly doing 6mph and the wind is picking up
It's certainly wishful thinking that the manufacturer might take note of this and do anything but I'm sure they'll be getting asked harder questions now

The issue with the 2002 Pan European 1300 ECU is that it is completely sealed, making access far from easy. I’ve seen images of ECUs where the outer plastic casing was removed to expose the electronics, but mine—and I know this because I bought a used one for testing—is completely potted in resin, which makes accessing the circuitry extremely difficult. In any case, the problem might not even be the ECU itself; I wanted to see if tricking the ECU with a signal from a piezoelectric disc might solve the issue. Naturally, I wanted to know if anyone had already tried this, because making a mistake—such as sending a current that fries the unit—would mean the bike becomes unusable. Also, if anyone happens to have the ECU wiring diagram identifying the knock sensor wires, it would save me the trouble of tracking them down (a task that isn't hard, but would be a waste of time if I already had the schematic).
