It's a beautiful early mid-September morning in Rockville: clear, 51°F. Don't let the 92 percent humidity number fool you- it'll drop sharply once Mr. Sun begins warming the air, starting shortly after the 0649 sunrise.

My calendar for today is completely empty, for the first time in quite a while. I'll wait to see what develops.

8C and still dark when I left the house on the bike this morning. Where has Summer gone? Will be (hopefully) 19 and sunny for the ride home.

It's clear and 49 this morning, rising to 70 and remaining sunny.

Yesterday's car track day went well for the 6 cars that were on-track.
We ended at 3:00pm, and went to dinner after a brief nap.

Today , it looks like a great day to take the neighbor's dog for a walk in our local trail system.
I'll also visit the gym, and replace the front stairs risers.

Thanks Keith.
Alex came by as promised yesterday, and he / we worked for 2 full hours. He checked a lot of what I had already checked, and confirmed what I had found.
The mower got new spark plugs, he checked compression which I had not done, and we checked the valves which were fine.
Also moved the points closer to the flywheel (magneto?).
When we got it running briefly with starter fluid, it exhausted heavy black smoke, indicating the carb was letting too much fuel into the combustion chamber.
Yeah, we checked the oil, and it smelled like gas.
Meaning although the carb was clean -- nay, spotless -- the float needle wasn't seating, and there's no adjustment for that.
Bottom line?
I need a new carburetor.
With only not quite 24 hours on the machine.
Cheap parts. This is not 1964, folks, when things were built to work and last.
The OEM carb is about 80 bucks, Chinesium knockoffs are a roll of the dice.
He gave me a break, only charged the $75 diagnostic fee, but not the $25 trip charge.
Disappointed, but relieved at the same time.
Now I know what is needed, and I didn't have to pay a shop $400.
Guess I'll be walking again next time I cut the grass.
If at first you don't succeed... then you're about average.
Darn it.
Small potatoes, in the big picture.
Or, ...first world problems.
But I have coffee.

nothing (of my immediate liking) on my schedule...

spent the morning finishing a book (novel #7 of "The Expanse", timeline 30 years after the end of the TV series...)
grabbed the push-mover and trimmed the lawn edges (where the robot can't reach)...
a "scary tree" Halloween decoration got delivered...
also a dog-skeleton which I'll hang on the neck with its leash... to send a message...
Don't get me wrong, I do like animals, a lot... but that constant hysterical yapping of those, now 4(!) pinchers 3 properties further is just annoying...

anyhoo, my your day not be spoiled by senseless barking...

Morning all! Cloudy and grey here, 13C for now, high of 19C later with possible sunshine this afternoon.

In-laws arrived last night. We had a pleasant evening and they'll hang out with my wife today. We're all headed to Tofino on Saturday for four days and then hopefully they will head home. I like them but they're the fourth in a row group of visitors and I'm pretty much all peopled out. In the interim, I will be working at work, not home .

G'mornin' from the office! It was a hella commute today. Tuesdays are always bad plus I had to ride up to corporate to get fingerprinted...2 hour commute for 5 minutes of finger pressing! Then more clutch-hand-cramping gridlock to get to the office. It had started out at 54F/12C so I added my jacket liner when I started out, but was boiling by the time I finally got parked. Seriously considered just mailing my fingers to them at one point. So, many thanks for the coffee, Keith!

Just a regular work day here, nothing to report. Got about a month until our show opens, so guess I'd better get cracking and memorize my lines and music...oh the poor souls who will be paying to hear me sing!

I'm pretty much all peopled out. In the interim, I will be working at work, not home .

It used to be, when I was still a workin' stiff, that I hid out at the office as much as I could around Christmas, the better to avoid the chaos and din that inevitably accompanies my North Carolina in-laws when they come a-callin'. They're wonderful people and all, but they have NO clue what an "indoor voice" is or how to use one, nor do they appear to grasp the concept of one person speaking at a time.

It might be that the loss of that convenient excuse ("Sorry everyone, but I've got a lot to do at the office. Don't wait up for me.") is the one-and-only downside to retirement.

My Dad used to tell the story of a guy who went to an auto repair shop for something under the dashboard. The shop owner apologized and said they'd be happy to do the work, but their dashboard specialist was out of town on vacation and wouldn't be back for a couple weeks.

Puzzled, the customer asked "What is it that makes your guy qualified to be a specialist in behind-the-dashboard repair work?"

The shop owner replied "He used to be a contortionist with the circus..."

Maybe it's a true story, I dunno.
