Re: What tires are best

I did very well with the Exedras (13k front, 11k rear) but decided to try the T30s this time. Since they didn't have the GTs, I went with the non GT. I like them so far, but if they only last 6-7k, I'll probably go back to Exedra next time.

I've tried three different Bridgestone rears in the stock 160/70 size. The BT020 lasted 11000km, the T30 Evo less than 4000km and the BT023 somewhere in between (haven't worn one out yet but my guess is 8000km). The BT023 is my preference of the three for traction, handling and longevity.

A front Pirelli Angel GT 110/80 lasts around 7000km, and works well on the ST11.

I don't do much straight up and down riding.

How bad is the Bridgestone Exedra Max on the ST1300 for the twisties. I have a 7200 mile ride and I only get 6k out of the Evo30GT, I got 7000 out of a Pilot Road Michelin but it was way past the wear bars. I am trying to make up my mind between Exedra or ME880. Doing west coast, high heat, twisties and high speeds.

Think I may do Exedra on rear and Battlax on front since I can get 10,000 out of a front battlax

I run the BT020 bias (BMW model) on the rear of my ST1100s when I want mileage. It's a 160/70 but would probably work on a ST1300. I've also heard that the Michelin Commander rears work well and will probably try one next time. Then you could always go darkside …

My 2000 st 1100 came with Avon tires. My only experience with these tire was on 1999 road king. The front tire had a bubble in the middle with only 25 miles. So needles to say my trust in Avon tires is pretty low. Anyone have options on what tires perform best on the st. ? Send me a line and let me know your thoughts
BT 023 Bridgestones on mine when I bought it and will probably stick with them as they seem fine so far.

Can't speak for the 1100, but I am on my 3rd set of Avon's on my GL1800 Goldwing. No problems with the Avon's, mileage is not the best but OK. Currently have about 11000 miles on the set. My 1300 had a Dunlop Roadsmart 2 on the rear when I bought it, and a michelin pilot on the front with about 1/2 tread left on it. I bought a Roadsmart 3 for the front to replace the Michelin when the time comes.... Not a big fan of Dunlop's, but we will see.....

I have asked Bridgestone for their recommendation and for the ST1100 Non ABS/TC the say the Battlax T31 front 110/80 18 58W and rear 160/70 17 73W. Has anyone tried these and can give feedback on them please?

I have used them this passed season, though mine is the ABS model. The front one has lasted 12k miles to the wear bars, I still have a bit of tread on them. I replaced the rear at 7300 miles and on my second T31 and it has 5k miles on it. They wear much better than the T30's almost the same performance though I think the T30's were a bit stickier, however I went through 2 and a half sets in 13K miles. ( not as economical as the T31's) Next season I will go with the T31's overall good value for the money and they do hold the road well.

If your ST 1100 is an ABS model (I think the tire size is different between the ABS & non-ABS), you might want to consider the Metzeler Z series. I have used them for the past 17 years - must have bought 10 sets - and I am very happy with them.

They don't get super-high mileage, but the handling is great, both in the rain and on the dry... I can confidently scrape the pegs without any concern that the tire will break loose.

I've run a set for the ABSII (120 front) and they are okay. I've got one on the front of one of my ABSII bikes now. But I just don't get much mileage out of the rears (but then I don't get mileage out of any radial - something wrong with the throttle I think ). Be sure you get the "GT" version as (IIRC) it has a stiffer sidewall which is better for the ST1100 weight bikes.

The GT version of the T31 is 170/60 only, not 160/70. I think you've answered this question before but any issue with the 170/60 in terms of fit or use?

Nope, I'm currently running that size of rear on one of my ABSII ST1100s with no issues at all. And I have another set hanging up ready to go on the next one that needs new 'dancing shoes'!

OK, thanks. I just finished off a pair of Z6's and have a set of Avon 3D XM's, with the rear 160/70 being reinforced, to put on for the start of the season next year. We'll see how they do. I've used the Z6 before and its a great tire, not as sticky as the T30 and T30 EVO, but longer lasting, but the 110/80 front always seems to be in short supply. I like to have a spare set of rubber on hand and may order the T31.

Sorry I don’t have a specific answer, Big’, on an ABSII Exedra front. As long as it’s the correct fitment; let us know which one you settle on.

Just an aside... a comment on this thread -
Noticed the OP, over 3 1/2 years ago, joined and in the next 2 weeks made one post on this thread, and 6 other posts in his ‘coolant level’ thread, and then left the site. I wonder what tires he bought...(?) He only got to read the first 14 replies here before ‘bailing’ on us.:(

Thanks - shopping now. I've run Avon AV Storm up front for years at the suggestion of PKPK - who I rode with for years in MN. But the last Avon front tire AV55 lasted only 3K before it cupped bad on both sides (only bright side was that my FitBit was registering 10000 steps in a 28 mile OW commute home).
