I've always liked this picture, along with so many others that Rockwell painted. He was so good at capturing a moment, and the vibe that goes with it. In this one, I feel there's so much that's subtle yet obvious (to me):
He's angry and determined not to give in or admit that he's at least partly at fault, but the precipitating event is almost certainly his fault.
She's slightly contrite about having blackened his eye, and ready to forgive him, but only on condition that he admit his share of the guilt.
Being young, this may have been their first dust-up so feelings are raw and running high.
The counselor, a person (man, judging by the hat and umbrella behind the open door) of some experience, has wisely kept them waiting so that they have time to ruminate and reflect on recent events. Perhaps they'll work it out in their own minds, even before he begins work?
