🥶 The Paulcb coldest ride of Winter 2025-2026

My commute yesterday was 22°F in and 34°F home. Practically summer riding. Summer boots, long-johns and jeans. Didn't even need the handlebar heaters. Looking foward to getting the summer bikes out again, once the salt is swept up. Only going to get better from here! Yep...only better! Right!?!
 
I went somewhere today when the weather was nice. I wore a half helmet a.k.a. “skid lid”.

But I got delayed & I won’t be returning until three in the morning. It will be below 30° and this is what my helmet will look like tonight:

My face & ears will get really cold.
 
Skip the ski mask and grow the beard for winter. Worked for me this morning on an e-bike (pedal style so just for your entertainment). Got the itch since it's above freezing the past few afternoons and rode the 45 minutes to work. i planned on about 22F and had a bit of trouble keeping my one hand warm so most of the way left them off the handlebars and out of the wind. Actually was 16F with no wind, beautiful stars and occasional light wisp of fog.PXL_20260211_131645603.jpg

That's darn impressive. I was thinking you wintered in Fla or something due to mileage on the tracker, but you really live and winter ride in Ia? I bow to you sir.

Does the Super 10 have 416,000 miles on it?
 
I have yet to find a bike temp sensor that shows anything below +14*F. One reason why I rely on my remote temp sensor. It's actually for Aquariums and Terrariums but shows temps from +158*F down to -58*F (+70*C to -50*C). Way higher and way lower than I'll ever ride.

@Cocklebur , I've known you are in Iowa but don't know which "corn field" you live in. :giggle-2x:

We've had a very mild winter season this year with only a few short dips into the really low temps. At least around the West Des Moines area.
 
I didn't think I would be able to stay on the list at 27°, so I was able to get 23° Sunday morning riding to breakfast. I may not get the opportunity to get any lower this year.
So maybe I will be able to stay on the list with this entry (actually, get back on the list with this).

Isn't all of Iowa just one big corn field?

Yes here all winter unless I get a chance to ride south once and a while.
416,000 miles and I just don't know how.

Not really, although there is a lot of that. There is also soybeans... and hogs (not Harleys)... lots of hogs, though not in my back yard. (Iowa is the top state for hog production). And on the NE corner or west coast of the state there are some hills (Driftless area and Loess hills).

And way higher or lower than the fish and reptiles that sensor was designed for. Moot point since they won't be riding – for the most part.
 
10F is indeed a good temp for riding! My Sunday turned into a ride when the last part was attached and my new Vstrom hack was ready for the road and I felt the need to test the rear fourseasons car tire mounted on it. I did dress a little bit light, but stopping in the middle of a 60 mile jaunt at a friend's house made it all doable. Took the photo at the end on lake near my house. The car tire was impressive in snow and snow crusted ice compared to regular car or sporty motorcycle tires. The front Shinko 705 although having useful traction did limit my pace, particularly when corners were in the foreground.4 seasons tire.jpgIce ride on Vstrom hack.jpg
 
I'm going to go out on a limb and take a guess that the game for this season is rather done. Temps in my area for the next 2 weeks are expected to stay from around 50*F to near 90*F. Kinda hard to find much cold outta that.

I actually got on the list this year.
Doesn't matter if I get bumped off, the warmer weather is MUCH more important to me.
...have I mentioned how I hate the cold?
Yeah, thought so.
