Realistically from reading your post the only recourse you have is a judgement for trespassing against the police dept for towing your vehicle from your property. There are legal aid groups that help with simple claims to do it yourself.
The main thing is you need an emergency injunction to prevent the sale or auction of the bike. Honestly you’re going to need a lawyer.

It was on the street, back to the curb. It was county beauty maintenance that had it towed. Had the little 1"sq. sticker that you couldn't see from the street been current, it would have been okay.

I haven't been able to find anyone who will talk to me yet.

I'm still trying to find out what the rules are for the county or the tow yard. Neither ever notified me that it had been towed six weeks earlier. I found out when I called to report it stolen.

Do you work in Virginia? Do you have any customers who are lawyers? I always had lawyers, doctors, engineers, managers, etc. as customers. I was never shy about asking them questions - and I don't remember any of them refusing to answer.

So sorry about this.
A friend lost his Z1 years back due to impound fees. A potential buyer ran off with it on a 'test ride'. He filed a theft report and didn't hear from it for nearly two years. Memphis police called and reported they had found the bike so he flew up to pick it up. Turns out it had been 'found' on the street just two weeks after it was reported as stolen. Almost two years worth of impound fees at $20 a day....cash only. $20 a day for 660 days. The bike had been 'stored' in their outdoor parking lot and was in miserable shape.
Likely they still have it.
Sometimes the inept, don't give a unowhat admin can be a greater problem than a crime.

Ok, then it's time for networking. You have to have friends, acquaintances, colleagues, or folks on this forum that you know who can recommend a good lawyer who can help you. Most lawyers (lets leave out those who charge $500+ an hour) offer a free consultation to decide if you really need them and if they want to handle the case. You could even go to a municipal judge and ask them who they would go to for a small case, without revealing the specifics. I used to ask building inspectors who they would hire to do certain work. That's different than asking for a referral, but it gets around the referral prohibition. Then I'd tell my customers who had asked me what I learned and how I learned it. This situation is dragging on and if you don't deal with it you will lose.

I have been agonizing over this, but I think it's the best thing to do.

Quick explanation:

I have been in NC since July, only going home to Richmond occasionally for medical and other appointments. At some point since my last trip in in Jan., the cover blew off of my '07 ST1300. The license had expired and I hadn't ridden it since June because the brake system has SMC and rear brake issues.

The county police had it towed as abandoned (even though it's registered to the address it was parked in front of) on Jan. 15th, and I just found out when I went in for medical appointments. As of Tuesday, the balance was $2,125, and going up $50 a day, and I can not afford anywhere near that much.

I decided that I would rather offer it for sale here than to see it go to who-knows-where. So, if anyone is interested, please contact me about buying it, which means coming up with the money and paying it to the tow yard. I will find out exact cost and procedure if and when I hear from someone.

Of course, all the keys would be included, as well as the title. It would be a normal sale. The deadline according to DMV is March 8th. so this would have to be done this coming week. I have a trailer to help pick it up if needed, and can either deliver it or store it until it can be retrieved.

I really wanted to keep this bike, but I can not afford the costs to get it back, which I calculate to be $2,325 today, and $2,425 on Monday. The main things I want are anything I have left in the luggage, and to see it go to a good home. Anything would be better than seeing it auctioned off or junked.

This is the bike I was given in July of '24. It is OEM silver and still in very good condition. I have added front and rear Sargent seats and a matching silver Givi top box to it. The only money I would ask for is to recover the costs of the seats and the top-box, or I can put the OEM seat back on it.

Also available separately are a front RDL seat, a set of a front and rear RDL seats, one or two good windshields, pannier liners, a set of new brake pads, a quartet harness, speaker enclosures, etc. I also have another '07 silver ST1300 with body damage on one side if the buyer is interested.

So, please contact me and help save this bike from purgatory! It is located in Richmond, VA.
I’d love to grab the speaker enclosures from you. I’ll send the shipping label.
