Hi All,

Just purchased this beauty.
As I did with all my previous bikes, I've joined the forum and started a new thread that will help me document all my efforts in bringing this bike to a proper working condition.
This will also work as a sort of online service history of the bike for myself or for a potential buyer ,if one day I decide to move on.
Made a thread like this for my last bike (VFR 800) and it was a great fun updating everyone on the progress.
Please feel free to advice and recommend, all opinions are welcome.
Easypete.

Purchase day : 61161 km

Known issues:

  1. Bike dies on idle - only runs on choke
  2. Tachometer not working
  3. Clutch crack noise - 2nd gear
  4. Exhaust leak's - from collector box all the way to the end.
  5. Rust - Frame, swingarm and more
  6. LETS GO!

:) ... very few "genuine" Anniversary models left running

Hi All,

Current odometer reading: 61651 km

Ok,
Introductions out of the way so I can go with all the works done so far.

So far I've replaced:
  1. Engine Oil (+ Liquy Moly Engine Flush)
  2. Oil filter
  3. Air Filter
  4. Fuel filter
  5. Spark plugs

Took the majority of the fairings off for cleaning and to gain access to the tachometer and the carburetor.

The tachometer, did not work until I took ot of the bike and connected it to a battery.
It is now working fine, why, I don't know but I'm not complaining :)

The carburetor is a different story, upon opening it I found a broken idle/pilot jet (?).
With a use of a Dremel tool I've managed to remove it. Also the jet was properly stuck. Might be a reason for running only on choke?
Just ordered a replacement jet and a few other things.

After buying the bike I've sprayed some carb cleaner around tank area to check for leaks, and boy there were a few, so I ordered new rubber intakes from Tourmax.

I've also noticed a considerable exhaust leak.
I've got an aftermarket MOTAR stainless exhaust and although beautiful I've got a exhaust leak from the collector box (both sides)
New clamps and gaskets ordered.

To all of you who never saw your clutch slave cylinder, please, you must look into it.
I was skeptical as the area around it was spotless but look at the state of it.
Clutch slave repair kit from All Ball's ordered.

So, at this moment in time the weather is beautiful and the bike is dead.
Carburetor is out, exhaust is off, clutch is gone and I'm waiting for parts, but for some reason I'm not too bothered. Wrenching is also fun.
While waiting for parts I've decided to take care of rust that is slowly eating my Beautiful Gold Train.
Dremel with some rust converter and Hammarite can do real miracles :)

All the best

If it won't idle without the choke (fuel enricher), then usually the low speed idle jets are clogged and need to be cleaned.
Hi Uncle Phil,
Is the Slow idle jet the same as Pilot jet in this case?
I’ve got a Keihin VD carb
Cheers

Here is one going for two grand. If it were not that far away it would have been mine.

I just call them the idle jet - so I'm not sure.
They are the ones the carbs used when the bike is idling with no throttle.
If they set for a good while, they tend to gum up.

Actually, that looks like a real nice bike. Looks like you’re well on your way to getting it running as it should with not too much effort. In the US, bikes like these are more typically recreational vehicles, and in other areas of the world, they are daily use vehicles, so that could mean the reason for the rust on the frame (more water and salt exposure). The frame and swing arm typically looks like that a lot in the UK. Years ago, my bike was running, but it was idling at 500 RPM and I could not get it to idle higher. I pulled the carb bank off the bike and cleaned all the pilot/idle jets and that fixed everything. I’m just wondering how the one pilot jet that you showed in the picture was broken. That’s a pretty unusual type of damage.

Hi Erdoc,
The bike was imported from abroad 6 years ago.
I believe it came from either Belgium or Netherlands.
Although the last owner claimed that regular services were done, he had nothing to back this claim up. In my opinion he just exploited it until it started giving him problems. Probably when it started to die he attempted repair and damaged the jet, but who knows. All I know is that I didn’t and that’s that.
The bike looks good but it’s tired underneath the fairings.
It’s my job to change that.
Cheers

Hi Slammer
Looks mint, but I can’t help to notice a little crack on a slide protection cover. It’s possible it landed on its side at some point.
Cheers

Hi, a little update again.

Carbs are now ready to be cleaned :)

No air compressor so I need to take it to my buddy for a thorough blow.
Before that I will clean the innards.
Rubber with soap and jets with carb cleaner and a little jet needle tool.

Cheers
EasyPete
