Honda wants us to believe the GW is a sports tourer, who cares, it isn't, but who cares.

Where does Honda call this a sports tourer or a replacement for the ST?

On the Dealer websites the base Goldwing is under Sport Tourer and the Goldwing Tour is under Touring. Just change the inventory requirements. Click Link

Every manufacturer defines their own categories... what one calls sport is only sport bikes but some will put a cruiser type bike in there also, or what most of us consider a sport tourer.

Some are adventure or adventure touring or adventure sport.. they all have different categories, it's all marketing and nothing else. Yes, there are obvious comparisons such as the ST1300 vs FJR1300 but Yamaha now has a transcontinental tourer.. lol.. whaaaaaaa?

Anyway, no one at Honda has ever officially called the Wing an ST replacement... except a salesman only because he's pushing a product and he'll call it a Corvette replacement if it means he'll sell it to you.

There is currently no ST replacement.. the ST1300 was a replacement for the previous ST1100 model and that's it. I'm sure in 2001 people were talking about the redesigned wing as a replacement for the ST1100 for a short period until the ST1300 was exposed in 2002-ish.

Anyway, none it it really matters... find something you like, is comfortable to you, fit's your financial situation and ride it as much as you can..

I was just about to make this very sentiment. It all really doesn't matter. Does it have two wheels? Does it feel good under you? Is it capable of riding how you want to ride? Then go ride it.

I got one. I did NOT trade or sell my ST1300. I honestly haven't been able to make a full and valid comparison, cuz I live in this heaven we call Iowa. It's still a bit chilly to get much comfortable riding in. The twisties still have winter's sand and gravel here and there. So all I've been able to do is casually try to get used to the new 'Wing. Only about 400 miles on her so far. So far I do not regret the purchase. I find her extremely comfortable, quick, powerful and handles like a dream. The bells and whistles are absolutely no comparison with the ST. But, they are different bikes. The end.

Is she an "ST replacement?" Well, I didn't sell mine yet. As Joe said, I don't know anyone that has declared it as such. I do call it my ST1800 based on the undeniable similarity in appearance and with a whole lot of tongue in cheek.

I have the afternoon off work today ... so I'm gonna go ride :biker:

One really sweet thing about the new wing is they went away from the shim/bucket valves and it's now the screw/locknut design for adjustments... given the fact that the valve covers are exposed that makes checking/adjusting valves a breeze.. I hope that if they bring a new ST to the market some day that they will allow access to the valve covers without taking off all the plastic and go to this design. Yes, it usually means a lower valve check interval but when it's easier than changing oil that just makes sense.

Correction, the intakes are still using shims but the exhaust valves are screw/locknut... and the exhaust valves are the ones that typically need adjustments.

Couldn't agree more Mellow. People can buy whatever they feel the urge to do and ride it however they like.
As for marketing, apparently it works.
Upt'North.
And yes, neat cam train arrangement.

For a lark someone needs to make some “ST1800†decals in the same style as the ST1300 ones.
That would confound and confuse.
And just be plain entertaining!

LOL !!!

I'm already looking for a source.

Just to make folks get a cramp in their brain.

I mentioned earlier about doing that if my 'Wing buddy caved and got a new one especially if it was DCT. I don't think that will happen but I can hope.

I maybe might look into a cost for a one-off if only out of base curiosity. It can't be cheap. I could put 'em on my ST and just say I got a piston kit. :rofl1:

I'll go one up on you- make them hydraulic lifters and forget about adjusting them! I put almost 200, 000 KM on my VT1100C Shadow and never removed a valve cover during that whole time. I know all the technical arguments about loss of power, slower rev's, lower rev's, increased weight, etc.. Reality is the overwhelming majority of people never come close to riding a motorcycle anywhere near its performance limits. Will the loss in performance of hydraulic lifters really be noticed? This doesn't square with the marketing departments who want to hype mechanical lifters as an indication of high performance of course. In the case of the Gold Wing it makes even more sense to me. For the price that is attached to it it should be a bike that is designed to go for a very long time with minimal planned maintenance.

I still mentally kick myself for turning down a gimme 650 Nighthawk with extremely low mileage. <sigh> One of the few really great deals and I missed out on it.

Looking at the new Wing it's hard not to see what a Next Gen ST could have looked like. Radical question: could the front fairing, mirrors, etc be adapted/mounted on an ST to give you that "look"?

Can you imagine the reaction of Big Red if loads of STs appeared on the roads sporting the new Wing front end

I'd take the front suspension, traction control, cruise control and seat instead. :) I still love the lines of the ST1300's style and the V4 engine, but the seat, suspension and supporting electronics package aren't up to modern standards.

As I had promised to a few folks, I finally had a chance to take a few pics of my ST1300 and my new 2018 'Wing side by side.
I'm no pro photographer, but I tried to get good representative shots for everyone.
