A little bit confused with Lightweight Adventure Class

The 500X with the British dual sport kit seems an option. It's cheap enough, and works with the ABS. Anyone else checked it out? 18" and 19" spoked wheels to the replace the stock ones.

I read through the development thread on ADVrider. The team that developed the kit also supplied one of the least expensive Dakar rally bikes last year (a de-stroked KTM690 down to 450cc) so they know their stuff. Just as a side note - ABS as used on a street bike is a bad thing on a dirt bike unless it can be turned off (exception - the KTM1190 technical wizardry). I don't know if the 500X can be turned off or not but if not, that would deal breaker for me. Some years back, I met up at the bottom of Copper Canyon with a bunch of around the world type riders and several crashed on the steep but easy dirt descent due to ABS kicking in just before gravelley switchbacks.

edit: here's a link to the thread on advrider. The revised first post has links to more than you ever wanted to know about the 500x kit

I have first hand experience with how bad ABS can be on a dirt road on the Tiger 800 XC. You can turn the ABS off, but you have to flip through menus to get to it.

I've been looking for a second bike, to be a "light weight" adventure bike to ride up in the mountains. The bike that has my attention currently is the KTM 690 Enduro R.
360 lbs 60+ hp. Any body seen or ridden one?

One of my regular Mexico riding buddies has one. Plenty fast - he hit 104 mph GPS speed on a dirt road in Baja. Biggest disadvantage is a small fuel tank. Second biggest disadvantage is it's popularity - new ones go for full retail and the used ones sell quickly for full asking price. Husqvarna is going to be selling pretty much the same bike in the near future in the USA. I just saw the announcement today. It has a 3.8 gallon fuel tank which is probably 20% more than the 690. Selectable engine maps and ABS with offroad settings too. They call it the 701 but it's the same engine

Seems simple enuff to add a switch up chain from the ABS fuse. Or, found this on NC forums:

How to disable ABS
If anybody is interested here is the info how to disable temporarily ABS on NC7500X and have fun off-road:
- start the engine and ride a few yards/meters for ABS self check test passed and the ABS light goes off.
- stop, put on neutral but don't turn the engine off
- put the bike on central stand as your rear wheel is off the ground a bit
- put second gear on
- rev the engine to around 20 miles/h or 35 km/h so the ABS light comes on blinking (will stay like that while abs is disabled)
- don't stop the engine, get bike off the stand and ride on and have fun - ABS is off
- to turn ABS on again simply turn the engine off and on
It's been tested and it works. (same on CB500X)

Magazines run out of fresh things to say about bikes that are 10-12 years old in their life cycle. You can only write some may "fresh" articles about the same bike/different graphics so many times.
