A road I'd like to ride...

We just returned from our family vacation visit to Sedona. There are a few routes I'd like to ride by bike someday. One is 285 from Denver, CO to 160 through Durango and Cortez to the 4 Corners. Especially between Denver and Durango.
Another route that looks a lot of fun but not as long is 89A between Flagstaff and Sedona in Arizona. Especially this one section.


Elevation change from Oak Creek Vista to the Sterling Springs Fish Hatchery is 1037 ft. There are rails on outside of much of it but still...
20 mph recommended for many of these turns. It was fun in a family bus (Ford Transit passenger van).

The nice thing about most of these roads is that they're different roads when ridden the other way.

Kinda like a reversible tie or belt.

We came into Sedona from Flagstaff at the beginning of the stay. Then yesterday drove the other way going from Sedona to Flagstaff. Was different. Fun both ways. Especially looking over the side on parts of it to see the next section of road straight down over the side 200-300 ft. There was a similar section in Colorado that was longer but maybe one less turn with a significant drop. That road also had guard rails but only on parts of the road... and one section of guard rail was missing from someone obviously deciding to take the shortcut down!

Bob that is a good road for sure. Only thing is next time go on south to Prescott. Best part of 89A is south of Cottonwood.

Bonus points if you ride to the Mingus Mt. Hang Glider launch. I had my ol Valkyrie clear out on the launch once. I think the last mile or so is dirt road. But the valley view is well worth the side trip!

IIRC, 89A was the original 89 til they rerouted it.

I've posted ride reports of this one often. It's probably my favorite from both a riding perspective and a scenery perspective. Just don't try to do both at the same time.



I'm heading to Northern California at the end of the month to ride the "Sierra Sidewinder" rally. It's hosted by the COG and will have three days of twisties.
