Hi all,

the rear wheel on my project 2003 non-ABS bike is very scabby. Pretty much beyond painting or powdercoating.

Does anyone know if a later ABS wheel fits OK? Do I just remove the tone ring?

Thanks.

No idea.

But High Wycombe Uk, yes?

According to Fowlers website, there is not a model for 2003 listed. Check your VIN - The 10TH character represents the model year. Probably a 2 for 2002, or the white label in the frame under the pillion seat. Does it say st1300 -2 or st1300-3 The last number represents the year.

The fiches on Fowlers site show both abs and non-abs as being identical including the pulsar ring, but the fuche for the final drive does not show an abs sensor for the non abs version, so either the wheel fiche has an error or they have duplicated the abs version because they know the wheel is identical.

However - the wheel code for 2002 and that for 2004 is different. How big a difference, I do not know. But if all of the hub components (spacers, bearings, flange bits etc) are the same between 2002 and 2004 and the tyre is the same there is a fair chance that the wheel codes do not represent a difference as regards ‘will it fit’ . It might be for example, that they changed the disign of the spokes after 2002, which would warrant a different number but not the fit.

I haven’t checked every part, I’ll leave that to you. But finding out could determine whether you are looking only for 2002 wheels or for any wheel from any year.

Yes you are right, it’s a 2002 UK model that was registered in 2003. So pre-ABS rather than non-ABS.

This wheel is different from all later models (no tone ring or tone ring mounting bosses) and has a different part number. There may be other differences, I can’t tell from a fiche picture.

Hence my original question.

I am hoping someone has actually tried to fit an ABS wheel to an pre-ABS bike and knows if it works before I buy one.

I don't know if this helps but I took a non abs wheel and tapped and drilled holes in it to attach an ABS ring and that worked on my 2005 ABS, I would think that any wheel would work even on a pre abs bike but not sure.

In North America we did not have a 2002 model year ST1300 so I don't know about the 2002 rear wheel rim. From 2003 onward all ST1300 rear wheel rims are the same regardless of whether they are ABS or not.
