Capturing the story of a small Italian manufacturer that had an outsized influence on the motorcycle world is Alan Cathcart’s latest book, Moto Laverda. The British motojournalist, who has authored many books about motorcycling as well as stories and reviews printed in Rider and other publications, brings a unique perspective to his account by test riding several of Moto Laverda’s multicylinder racing models.
This book follows the story of Moto Laverda under the ownership of the Laverda family from 1949 until the mid-1980s. Notable chapters in this history include the production of the first 750cc sportbike, the development of the first full 1,000cc Hypersports model, and the creation of the iconic V6 endurance racer seen at the 1978 Bol d’Or 24-Hour race.

Moto Laverda models tested by Cathcart in this book include the 750 SFC (only 549 units built between 1971-1976), the 1975 3C Three-cylinder endurance racer, the 1978 Laverda V6 prototype endurance racer, and the 1984 RGS TT1 Triple.
Cathcart’s personal experience with the brand extends to his victory at the 1984 Daytona Battle of the Twins race, which he won aboard the Ogier Laverda 600TT2. He explores this story in the book, as well as the history of the Australian-built 915 SFC Twin that won the Italian Post-Classic Championship in 2002. Cathcart also includes a detailed look at the Laverda Museum, located in the Moto Laverda home town of Breganze.
Moto Laverda by Alan Cathcart is published by FBA Moto Italiane as a large-format hard-cover with high-quality glossy paper. It contains 176 pages, including 83 full-page photos, and the text is in both Italian and English. Only 1,000 individually numbers copies will be printed, and moto enthusiasts can order theirs directly from the publisher’s website for €55.
