Alternator - Flashing the field?

Many thanks guys.

I continued my quest into getting the alternator out. I'd really love to find the engineer who designed that set up and shake very warmly by the throat.

How the f### am I meant to f####### remove that f###### bottom f####### bolt???????

Approx 7 hours so far - last three hours try to get a 12mm socket onto that bottom bolt and then using the 9 degrees of movement to crack it off. And failing miserably. Mind, these bolts have been in place for 19 years and 60k miles. The top ones took a LOT of leverage. I'll give it another half hour tomorrow then I'm going to remove it using a sledgehammer.

any suggestions?
it get easier 2nd and 3rd time.

"gets easier second and third time"??????

Aaaaasaaaarrrgggggghjjjhhhhhhh!!!!

Thankfully a half inch knuckle joint saved the day. Piece of cake with the right kit. "LOL"

Found Dave (email =slickonline@hotmail.com) in Cleethorpes who seems able to strip and refund knackered alternators in his sleep. At 10% of the cost of a new one.

putting bike together as we speak. Getting rad back on was a bitch - after an hour I realised how it should go back on in about five seconds without any fuss. Just waiting for a new O ring for the collant elbow on left bank. I've got some gasket paper but Dave strongly advised against it.

One job I couldn't do was unblock the drain hole in the top of the V so no doubt there WILL be a second time at some point..........

Best do a load test on the battery. When they go south on an ST,, they do so with little or no notice. I tend to use the cheaper batteries that I can pick up at the auto parts down the street. They last a reliable 2 years or so. I think I have been stranded twice,,, without much notice either time. CAt'

Thanks. Just to follow up on this, I've done 1200miles since the work, and everything is working fine. I did install a smart alternator status LED from Gammatronics to monitor, and all seems good.
