alternator question

I put this question in the General Message Forum, I guess I shoulda put it here. Anyway, I've re-installed my alternator (28 Amp) and there is a gap between the stator housing and the rotor base that it bolts to. Should that gap be there? It's about a millimetre (1/32" or so) wide. It's been a while since I took it apart and I cannot remember what it looked like. Thanks.

The 28A is still on my 1991, never looked. For the ST1100 try My-Mc, lot of activity there.
