Anyone ever replace ST1100 handlebars...

Hi Don,

I saw "lots of BMW handlebars" this weekend....I worked a charity food booth at the Washington BMW Riders annual campout/get together in Menlo, WA. Saw at least one other Honda ST there...

I like the riding position with the BMW bars. Of course, it puts more weight on my pointy butt bones, but, I have an appointment at Mr. Ed's Moto in Albany, OR to make a custom seat on the 28th of August. Guess I'll have a "mini-goldwing" after that...

Glad the risers worked for you! Hope you've steered clear of the "California housing crash"...

Glad all is well with the bars. I'm good as far as the housing turmoil. Got my place up in the woods safe and sound. I do know several people that took out such out ragious loans that they just had to walk away from. They lost everything. really sad. I really don't know who to blame, the lenders or the fools who singed on the dotted line, maby a mix of both.

Yup. I replaced my stock bars (ST1100) with a set from a 2008 Honda Tracker ATV. Shiny, powder-coated black, about 2 inches higher and back an inch or so, depending on the mounting. I re-routed cables and hoses behind the top triple clamp--no problem. Interestingly, I'm getting LESS vibes with the ATV bars without the weights/bar ends than I did with the stockers. The bars were about $32 from the local Honda dealer. I don't have pics, but will try to get some taken in the next few days. MUCH more comfortable for us old farts.

Thicker-walled aluminum bars don't need weights, they handle vibes much better than steel. I wasnt aware the ST had vibes with any bar however...
 
I just bought a set of 1300 bars to try to go on my '96. I noticed nobody replied on this mod...anyone seen it?

Looks like this is a better deal than the risers, im interested but when I Google 2008 Honda Tracker i,m comming up with nothing. Any others have alternatives or opinions on this?

Sorry...I just got back to this thread. The bars are from an '08 Honda Rancher ATV, not Tracker (Old-timers disease has just reared it's ugly head).

How about this.

I think these handlebars may be of a Suzuki Bandit then add polished bar ends and resevoir caps and not forgeting to polish the top yoke.

I find it very comfy but i don't know what it felt like before.

I have really short arms. When I bought my ST1100 a few years back, I rode it home from about 4 hours away on stock bars. Oh, boy...I was hurtin'. So I got some 4" risers and that's made a world of difference. I'd still prefer to be more upright, but it's good enough for the riding I do. Cool thing was I didn't have to get new cables. 4" risers definitely took up the slack I had, but they work fine.
 
I have a set I got from eBay for $15 new on my ST-UJM. Just search for handlebars and you'll find the vendor. It's not a bad setup for riding. I had to extend the wiring for the right side switches as I recall, and you have to drill some small holes for the switch mounting. Here they are off the bike:

On my '91 ST I've got a set of the cheap BMW or GT Touring bend ebay bars. Not much rise, a bit more pullback. I suffer from some numbness in the fingers at time and wanted to try the Hunter Flat bars without hacking into the stock bars. I have the 4 inch risers (didn't know that was not stock until recently) so I am now close to stock position with just a hair more pull back, and I cut the bars a bit wide (I would have done MX bars but these were hanging around looking to be cut up) and soon after I flipped the upper clamps and used some extras from my old XL250 and some longer bolts to get a bit more height. I rode almost 1400 miles home for vacation and they did okay. I may grab some ST bend bars I've seen and cut those down to get my old position back with the 4" higher rise and re-re-rework the left hand Hunter installation. I did some wiring work after my trip and rode without the windshield and this position was perfect. with the wind support on the chest. Add the full height shield and it's just a bit too much lean for my arthritic bones. So far this is the only image of them and it's not very good, but it shows the approximate height.

Learned to pack lighter, but that is the stockers and the flipped upper clamps atop the tal risers. Too tight on the cables in part caused me to crash last november.
And the extra bit just wasn't worth getting longer cables and lines so if I go back to stock bend it will be without that.

Here is a reasonable solution. Rox Risers. Look for the pivoting version in the snowmobile section. I have ran the 3.5" risers with the stock bars and with the stock cables. I am now running the 5 7/8" risers with the 1" stack riser and stock bar for a total of 6 7/8 rise with 5.5" longer brake and clutch hose and throttle cables. I am very happy with that setup. Had to modify the seat to change the angle on my backside. Really like the upright posture.

Another solution is a set of Silverwing (The scooter) bars from 2002 to current. They are just about the same width and bend, but they are several inches taller than stock. You would need longer throttle cables and brake and clutch hoses. But would be a nice solution.
 
DaveyB, the tall ones are the K75 bars. I have a set that I will be taking off my 97 this winter if you are still needing a set later.

Since I have been riding my VFR800 fi a lot since I got it about a month ago I now find the st1100's bars very strange when I get back on the pan,anyone ever changed the bars to be more like the vfr's sort of dropped/ more sporty position ?
I find the vfr's bars are a nicer position for cornering

..........true, for younger riders. Rode my son"s Viffer on mountain twisties, and after 15min. swapped him back for my ST. Realize these bikes and the ST 'like' weight on front for better handling running twisties, but our older hands and such 'fall asleep', get numb. I use the older style fully adjustable Heli-Bars on my ST and same ones work well on my 81 Venturer 1100(XS11) Yammy.
 
Flanders makes a whole range of handlebars, but they are a little pricey. They give the height, pullback, center and width for each bar, so their site is a good reference since they also specify what make/model some bars substitute for.

I made a set of risers for my ST1100 - see pic. I had a longer clutch hose and longer front brake hose made up by Brake Materials & Parts in Ft. Wayne ( using BrakeQuip equipment ) for a very reasonable cost - less than OEM.

I sent them my 15 year old hoses and a week later received the new hoses - exact copies, except for being 4" longer.

I fitted a set of Renthall bars, plus risers from an Ebay shop somewhere, no need to change any cables or hoses, but the bar cover moulding had to go. Now very comfy to ride, bringing the handles a bit nearer and higher and slightly wider, looks pretty good too. Had to make a shroud for the ign. switch to neaten up the look. (secret design)!
