The plastic on the side of the helmet that cover the lens, broke. Not completely, but enough to almost keep the lens attached. My question is how to take the cover off completely.

Slide a small flat tip screw driver into the bottom portion. You should be able to see a red release in there....slide the screwdriver into the middle of it and it should release...

I've had several side covers break during lens changes... Arai will replace under warranty

I just go to cycle gear and they hook me up with a new one....

STony,
remove the shield, then move the shield tabs all the way up. Look sideways at the cover (from the front) and you'll see, just underneath the shield tabs, 2 little red tabs.

if you find something that can reach in there and squeeze those 2 red tabs together and pull towards the front of the helmet, the pod will pop off.

I have a great pair of tweezers that work well, and they are put away in a safe place cuz it's kinda hard to find the right 'tool' for this job.

good luck with it. If your arai is still within warranty, contact them and tell them the pod broke during normal use. They've given me 2 new pods for free before (actually only needed one but they sent both)....

Thanks...that was easy.

I'm a dedicated Arai-head, but I find it amazing that they continue to use their shield mechanism. Reading their website over the years, they have come up with several excuses... um, I mean engineering reasons for this design. Surely a company that advertises itself as the premiere, numero-uno helmet maker in the world can come up with something better. Having had side pods snap while a long way from a dealer, I now carry a spare pair in the tank bag when I travel. I had no idea how to remove a pod the first time - it's not at all intuitive - and relied on duct tape for three days.

Still, the all-day comfort keeps me in an Arai :)

The extreme comfort, quiet...is the main reason I still have mine..Love it...

Would love to chuck the shield mechanism myself..

Arai recently "Modified" the side shield base plates....doesn't look much different but seems to be holding up better than the last version.....Cycle gear swapped out both base plates and side covers under warranty on my last visit....

Amen! Just drives me nuts that they can't find a better approach. But based on overall comfort, I doubt I'd ride with anything else.

The chin vent is removeable too. Mine broke in the open position and later one visor pod broke when I flipped the visor up. It was still under warranty but the dealer wouldn't touch it, said contact Arai yourself, they give us the run around. I did contact Arai via email and the reply was that I surely had damaged the helmet by banging it against something - that's what it always is. As you can imagine my response was terse and to the point. How the frak do you know it's my fault and not defective from behind your desk? What kind of customer service is that for a $400 helmet from a top manufacturer? I got no response but a pack of new helmet parts showed up a week later, no charge. That was about a year ago. One win for our side.
