Well thus far both of the zipper pull tabs have broken on my tactical boots. You know, the little metal eyelet with the pull tab that allows you to move the zipper to go up/down? That usually seems to be the weakest link in the zipper system.

What to do? Zipping is nearly impossible without the pull tab. Getting tbe zipper fixed/replaced can be nearly 1/2 as expensive as buying a new set of boots.

Never fear, good ole AV has McGyvered the heck out of it for mere pennies...

Parts:
- key rings
- zip ties

Not McGyver, Mc8R. Well done. I'd avoid a second pair of that brand... unless they fit your feet like a glove. Then buy that second pair now, cuz they won't be available when you want them.

That's the same problem I had with my Aerostich zippers. Another repair option is to take a piece of 14 gauge solid copper wire and make a new loop. Easy to solder the ends together to make a complete loop.

Hmm, for Soldiers and Marines, saying you wear zippered "tactical" boots is admitting to you being a Zoomie or a Squid...or worse - Civilian.:eek::rofl1::rofl1:

When I saw the pic, I did wonder if AV8R would more severely punish (ticket Vs talking to) someone for smirking at his boots.

Well done on the McGyver, though.

I've never used the key ring. I just keep the zip tie loop larger to use as the pull and mushroom the cut tip with a lighter to prevent it from going back thru if the "ratchet" in the zip tie slips.

Good responses all...

but I have to admit to having to look up the term “zoomie”. What came to mind was “pommies”, which is different.
There were two definitions of note:
a. When your dog gets a burst of frenetic energy and bugs out like a rocket, aka: Frenetic Random Activity Periods (FRAPs)
b. A graduate of the USAFA, who of course go on to fly rockets

being the term was juxtapositioned to “squid”, of which I’m familiar being my brother was one, I presume the space cadet flavor was employed.

Oh did I mention that I added a pair of Dr Scholl gel pads to the sole of these boots. Much improvement.

As a Civvy pommie, I can confirm that grunts look up to zoomies as they fly overhead (generic term for air force).

Also, as I'm sure you're aware, squids are great in a straight line, but struggle a little with changing direction.

We’ll bust my buttons....

”squid” (actually squid-dick) is what the Jarines called my bro when he was a Navy boy.

however....
the urban lexicon form of “squid” is another definition that seems to be apripro to our sport:

A young motorcyclist who overestimates his abilities, boasts of his riding skills when in reality he has none. Squid bikes are usually decorated with chrome and various anodized bits. Rear tyres are too wide for their own good, swing-arm extended. Really slow in the corners, and sudden bursts of acceleration when a straight appears. Squids wear no protection, deeming themselves invincible. This fact compounds itself with the fact that they engage in 'extreem riding'--performing wheelies and “stoppies”in public areas. Squids wreck alot. Derived from 'squirly kid'”
