Well, its that time of year again...

Has anyone got any bar muffs themselves they are particularly impressed with? Or seen any interesting ones?

They all seem to follow the standard form of a couple of flat bits of vinyl sewn together.

I'm looking for something a bit better throughout. Hippo Hands look nice but are probably the most expensive. :(

btw, I have powerlet headed gloves and heated grips but still get cold hands when I'm riding in below freezing temps at 75MPH. :(

Hi i put handle bar muffs on my 1300 and i couldnt see my mirror,s.
but thay were warm.:D

So do more people use hand-guards vs. handlebar mitts/muffs?

buy a set from quadboss about 19bucks. they work great and i think they are much better then the hippo hands that i also have owned. that with the electric grips and you can through your winter gloves away

your welcome. Just order a set for 19 buck. I think you can get them in black or camo. They aren't as long as some and are stiff enough to get your hands in and out also they pack small. they take a little getting used to but they work very well. They just slide on and a velcro strap holds them in place.

I used those Moose mitts on my 1100 last year. Don't recall them interfering with anything and they worked fine. No insulation other than the fleece lining. Haven't used em this year yet.

Smash, pleased to have met you in Montrose@ Arvins. I've got heated grips, but don't use them when I've got the HippoHands on. I have Helis and they work fine. Also at times use them on my XS11 as it has no heat. Have the hard side ones that have hole for handlebar mirrors that I use on the XS, and it also has Helis(same ones as on the ST). Have the gold label(tad shorter) and the blue label soft side ones also. They ARE still the best thing out there for having warm paws IMO. Have ridden in -20F.....other parts a bit chilled, but not hands. On the ST if I have a set of these on, sure don't want the heat on even on low, as it is too hot to hang on to grips, with gloves on! When it's that cold, heated grips sure don't help the knuckle side of my hands anyway. Also, mirror visibility is NOT an issue. Hope that helps. PM me for resolving the issue.

That's apretty fair price Smash, as they were almost a hundred back when Vetter first had them out on the very late seventies and early eighties. Always wanted a set back then to put on my new then XS1100 Venturer Yammy(which I still have and tour on as much as the STeed), but could not afford. So now have five sets, one set is NOS, another is the Bagman by Vetter and rest are all Hippos by Vetter. The ones others have shown you here would work well to, plus you can kinda fold them up for storage. That's what I have done with the Vetter Bagman's and keep them on the bike. Used them in June across the Mojave going to Santa Cruz and runnin part of PCH. No, that was not a misprint!........I and another rider friend bout froze our tails for a bit from Vegas to Bakersfield...........way better than what we had mentally prepared for!

My sympathies on the budget issue! I had a pair of Hippo Hands for my '81 KZ440 in Maine. They were supper and worth every cent. No heated anything back then, and they did the job, I'd wrap my hands in plastic bags stuffed with some kind of insulation and save my pennies, if it were me.

Good luck,

Rod

Understand that! Back "in the day" I to didn't have the budget either(raising family, etc.), rode the ten miles to work leaving vehicle home for wife in case of emergencies. Fast forward, couple yrs. ago bid to win most every set that was NOS or perfect cond. off e-bay "just because". So now if someone wants to ride, but won't go cause of cold hands.......wa-la, guess what, no excuse, fire that scoot up, lets go! Besides that, if a fellow rider were to come here "over the hill" from the big town and weather turns foul, more than happy to see that there hands/arms stay toasty so they can get back in comfort!

So, how many pairs have you got? Would you sell a pair?

Put my Cabela's ATV MITTENS on for a ride to South Dakota last week, starts the fifth winter I have used them. With Dual Star heated grips they keep my hands very comfortable. 18 degrees is the coldest I have left the house and could have ridden without gloves comfortably. Sometimes start the grips on high but gets too hot there even with gloves so low or off is usual position.

The mittens have a fleece lining and a somewhat water resistant outer covering that I soak in Camp Dry.

I also run full Gerbings so as long as streets are dry I'm good to go in any temp.

When I rode into the city (Colo Springs) today, I was checking out the previous comments that the mittens render the mirrors unusable and noted that about 20%, maybe a dab less, of the upper-inside quadrant of the mirror is obscured, leaving plenty to do the job.
