I got the itch to do the Beartooth pass, as I’ve not ridden it before, so I planned a little trip from East Nebraska to Montana.
My son was able to join me, he took his Shadow 750.
After a pre ride check, we left on a Saturday and returned the next Saturday. Camped every night, some nights we had reservations, some we just showed up and inquired if there are any tent sites available.
We had great weather the whole way, and no close calls with cagers.
We hit many of the usual spots in the area: Needles Hwy, Iron Mountain Road, Sturgis, Devil’s Tower, Beartooth Pass (3 times), Yellowstone and Tetons.

The nicest ride was probably Sylvan Pass, on the east exit of Yellowstone. We hit it in the late afternoon, after all the traffic, and just zoomed down it, following Shoshone river.
We even saw a moose in Yellowstone.

We grilled burgers in South Dakota, but Wyoming and Montana had fire bans in effect, so we stuck to oatmeal and coffe for breakfast (Starbucks has excellent dehydrated coffee varieties), eating on the road for lunch and beans and weenies for dinner. (Or a food truck on a couple of nights.) Lots of bananas to stay regular, and they don’t need washing.

I think next bit of equipment I get will be some proper riding pants. Sweaty denim becomes painful towards the end of a day’s ride. (Last 2 days were about 480 miles each.)

We had Senas for communication and occasional music, and I will admit, they made traveling a lot easier.
Navigation was done via Siri/Apple maps and regular paper maps when I got annoyed with Siri.

Great trip, incredibly grateful all went well and that I got a chance to do it with my son.

How'd the Shadow do going up/down those mountain area hills at interstate speeds???

I've always been impressed how well those bikes ran... they just seem to NEVER give up, no matter how hard you run them.

Highly suggest riding pants of some kind. Jeans are just terrible on a bike. You are a tougher man than I. I have ridden many miles in Tourmaster Flex pants and jacket. Finally bit the bullet and went Motoport for proper fit.

Anything beats jeans. Get some seamless underwear also. That helps tons.

BCG Men's Performance 9 in Solid Compression Briefs at Academy does it for me for many years now. Good times with your son. I used to do that with my son and now he has his own family and no time for Dad and riding so enjoy him while you can.

Somehow both of these are true:
- The Shadow is a bit "underpowered". There is not much there at the top end.
- He was also able to keep up with me at 85MPH all day.

Once he figured out to drop it into 3rd gear, he had plenty of passing power. 4th can pass around 60 MPH, but for quick passes at higher speeds, he had to dig a bit deeper.
If we were passing people at 90 MPH (which wasn't very often), then that seemed to max out the bike.

But yeah, overall, he was able to keep up just fine.

The bike was comfortable, he has a Mustang seat on it, and very easy to ride, which helps with comfort and confidence. It's a testament to that line that Honda is still selling them year after year.

Indeed. I think I'm done with jeans on longer rides. (Anything longer than 15 mins :) )
Appreciate the reccomendation for seamless underwear. Was not aware that is even a thing!

Cats in the cradle, right? (The song...)

Thanks for sharing this.
The vistas out West make me consider a move, one day.
But the snow! It really would cut into my year-long riding season here in the South...

On the Shadow Aero forum there is a guy that has over 230K miles on one , Not bad life for a ~$7K , 750 V-Twin.
I have one I commuted with before I retired , still ride it , I just hate to give it up & sell it .
( of course you ride it 150 miles & your rear is asking your brain WHY didn't you take the ST or GoldWing instead ! )

You know, people like to talk about "flyover" states, but I really can't complain about living in Nebraska. We get 4 seasons, we're a day's travel away from Black Hills, Denver, or Kansas City. We have rivers and lakes for water sports, and in the winter can go skiing/snowboarding in Black Hills or Colorado. So, it works out...
Could use a bit more curves in the road though :p

I know what you mean about not being able to part with it. Technically, the one my son rides (and I refer to it as "his") is mine. I bought it in 2012 and rode for a few years until the ST came my way. I never got rid of it because it was paid off, and such a practical and easy bike to ride. So he rides it now until he gets his "permanent" bike. Then it will be on to my younger son when he is ready for it.
But yeah, the Shadows just give you everything they have, and they don't complain.

Great report. I've done this ride a few times over the years from home base in Rapid City. Did you guys make it up/down Chief Joseph Scenic Byway by chance? I can't wait to try it on the ST after riding it on my Valkyrie Interstate last year. Tons of fast curves and very little traffic.

So, we didn’t do the Chief Joseph byway. It kind of didn’t work into our plans. So maybe next time?
Would also reccomend east exit of Yellowstone to Wapiti, around 6 PM, after the traffic clears. (AKA Sylvan pass.) Curvy, fast and scenic.

My sister lives in Billings, Montana... We have multiple times run through Beartooth, Yellowstone, Tetons, and Sylvan (taking various routes). Beautiful country up there, awesome riding.
